This is an article written in 2001 by the contemporary Australian ethicist Peter Singer. In a nutshell, he is suggesting that we reconsider the taboo of mutually satisfactory sex with animals, as we, as a society, have done with oral sex, homosexuality and so on.

Please read the article before you post your opinion. I won't hesitate to report anyone who spams this thread.

 

I think they could have gotten their point across better if they used less vulgar language at certain points. But ya, I tend to agree, if no harm is done... go nuts

 

I don't want to turn this into a debate over that, but:

That word shouldn't be offensive if used correctly, BUT, it clearly had an effect on you and that's the point.

 

Except that our society has attached stigmas to such words, that normally have negative expressions. I personally feel that by doing this they detract from the main focus of the article

 

The article is about taboos, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the author included it simply because it is the most tabooed word in the English language. In any case, it wasn't always used as it is now.

Though I find sexual activity with animals slightly disturbing, I feel for people who have a sexual fetish for it. I mean, it's completely shunned out by society. Though, how is it any different then having a foot fetish, which seems to be more widely accepted? They just enjoy a different sexual preference.

I do think it should be Taboo, but more widely accepted by society, though I doubt it will ever happen.

Well, I don't think sex with animals is okay, he does raise a good point about social "taboos" however. Anyone remember the man who practiced sodomy with a horse and died?

 

Some believe that if one fetish is allowed in society, They all should be. I myself believe there is a line where you should just say No.
I think the idea of having sexual relations with an animal seems quite.. Wrong. I think that if animals could speak, I would have a different view on it, but they can't even say if they "Like" it.

Having sex with an animal I think is more than just a social disapproval.


It can harm the animals..and even if you are not harming an animal then why should it be ok to have sex with another breathing thing against its will? How can someone claim that its "partner" in this sex activity is willing?

I think sex with other species is just so unnatural, especially due to there not being any reproductive possibilities.

 

No one said it was against the animal's will.

The impossibility of reproduction makes it immoral? By that logic, elderly women, infertile men, and homosexuals shouldn't have sex.

 

Elderly Women, Infertile men and Homosexuals can say Yes or No to sex. Can animals?

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but animals tend to shy away from stuff that abuses or goes against what they want. You can't say if the animal could speak it would say no you have no evidence to back that claim up.

Sure. A chimpanzee would rip someone's face off if they tried to have sex with it and it wasn't interested.

If the animal cannot consent then it is not consensual sex.

 

What signifies consent? Do you have to be able to speak?

 

No but an animal cannot consent to sex with a human. You see, animals(besides dolphins, and maybe a select VERY few species that isn't typically used for bestiality) do not have sex for pleasure. They have sex for reproduction and that is it. Therefore how can they willingly have sex for non-reproductive reasons?
