Character Traits

Those traits which indicate good character in a person:

1. Integrity
2. Courage
3. Honesty
4. Motive power / Force of will
5. Excellence in deeds
6. Temperance (aversion to general excess)
7. Majesty (greatness of presence)
8. Liberality (soulful egoistic generosity)
9. Humility (knowledge of one's lack of knowledge)
10. Gentleness (aversion to violence and incivility)
11. Charm

(Most from Aristotelian virtue ethics.)

Personally I strive after all of these traits. And these are the traits I look for most in my friends and family.

Discuss their applicability to your life; those which you agree with, those which you do not agree with, any you think should be added.

 

So that would exclude humility then?

 

So what steps have you taken toward achieving these virtues in your life?

 

Being charming or witty is a sort of superset of civility. It's a non-manipulative social skill... essentially creating a mutually enjoyable conversation atmosphere wherever you go.

I don't think that's a virtue per se. I guess it could be a character trait. But it sounds more like a combination of the first four.

To clarify: virtues are those things which denote the preferable or 'good' direction of a choice or category of choices. It isn't a choice to respect yourself or respect others; if it was then everyone would just respect themselves and there would be no mental illness or shame or guilt.

You just erased honesty, integrity and courage from your list of virtues.

It's not your responsibility if you don't find someone to be respectable. That is their problem. Just as I don't find you to be respectable at present, and that is your problem. If you weren't spouting crap without forethought or knowledge, then perhaps I would find you to be respectable.

Why would you come onto a virtue ethics thread where the first virtue listed is integrity and post something to the effect of "acting without integrity is a virtue" and then fail to justify your point?

 

Certainly.

Honesty, integrity, and courage are the three core most values. You might as well not exist without those three, for all the happiness your life without them will bring you.
