    Drugs in Sport?

Well, today we had a very indepth conversation about whether drugs in sports should be allowed. We actually never came to a conclusion, there was always a counter arguement.

    What are your thoughts?

What do you mean, I thought most sports have banned drug abuse?
Also, when you define drug, It could mean anything like caffeine. Ie, drinking a sports drink before hand, for the extra boast.

Do you mean it would be fun as it would be more exciting? Lets say someone running a 8 second 100m run for example.

I mean Steroids, Beta Blockers, Durietics, etc. And yes, all sports have banned those kind of drugs.

???? I can't imagine, someone supporting drugs in sports. Can you share some of those counter arguments, because other than it being just being a little more crazy there is no good in it... As us humans develop we are still getting better more athletic! stronger, we can survive longer. Soon the equivalent of taking steroids will just be everyday thing in the future.

I do not believe that drugs should be allowed in sports. Good athletes should have to train to get that good, not inject themselves with steroids so they can get bigger, stronger, and faster. Sports are better without steroids.

I'm sure you would like to see World Records smashed in the olympics.

But, most of these drugs that are banned in sport, you can get on perscription.

How do you know? Have you ever watched sports where everyone has been on Steroids? I think it would bring a whole new, higher intensity to sport.

If you're meaning as in Performance Enhancing Drugs, then sure why not? The leagues have boosted attendance when guys are throwing the ball 105 MPH, smashing monster home runs, etc.

No one is forcing them into steroids, so health issues can be avoided if need be. Not to mention, that steroids can be for good, if use correctly to heal, rather than get stronger.

You can argue that Gatorade is a P.E.D. (check the Bob Knight interview on ESPN).

Technology will always change games, and it shouldn't be kept out.

I personally take pride in my athletic prowess and I worked hard to get where I was when I competed. I feel like steroids is cheating and lying to yourself. But however if there was a group of sports that allowed steroids I think it would be interesting to see the outcome.

But wouldn't you feel alittle responsible for the effects on the performer? Athletes sitting there shaking because of Steroids, or any other effect.

I'm just playing devils advocate here, I'm sitting on the fence.

Obviously it should be left up to the leagues, but I would love to see stronger and faster athletes.

Take the example of bodybuilding. There is the IFBB where they don't drug test, and there are also tested federations if you're into natural bodybuilding (which is boring as hell compared to nontested.)

Some of the banned drugs are a little rediculous, half the time players get suspended for banned substances they didn't know that they were taking them. For example, Manny Ramirez (baseball player for the dodgers) got suspended last year for taking a pill perscribed to him by doctors that contained a banned substance.

While yes, bigger, stronger, faster players would be more exciting to watch, what about their health? Steroids can increase the risk of having heart disease, having a stroke and different types of cancers. While on steroids there is a higher chance of getting injured also. Steroids would make the game more exciting and faster but at the expense of the athletes health.

Forgot to quote this but at Ferin Silver:
Yeah no ones forcing them to take steroids but when people that do take steroids become stronger and faster then the people that don't this makes them seem like not as good athletes as the steroid atheletes. Why should an exceptionally good athelete take steroids and risk his health because other athletes that arn't as good take them?

Why would an exceptional athlete take steroids if the other players are still not better then him? Even with PED's sport still takes skill, just a lil' less.

Every sport takes skill. Strength is one thing, and agility too gained from anabolic steroids or any performance enhancing drugs in that matter, but there is still natural skill. Most professional sports should start taking more immediate and concentrated actions against anyone and everyone that uses some sort of illegal drug or performance enhancing drug.

Throughout history, in professional sports, athletes didn't need to take performance enhancing drugs to be good (Unlike that womens swimming team in Europe that took too many drugs and really looked like men, but got caught and indicted). Continue the tradition with purely skilled sport athletes.

If someone chooses to use performance enhancing drugs, so be it, but don't take part in team sports. You can shrink your penis and shribble your balls up, and cut your life by 30 years, but that isn't my problem. I play it safe, play it clean, keep it real. That is the most ethical way of looking at it.

Here's an example: You're the best footballer in the world. There is a bunch of other okay players that wanna be better then you so they all take steroids. They get stronger, faster, and pretty much better then you because of the steroids. Now you are considered one of the decent players, while all the steroid users are among the top players. Now for you to reclaim your spot among the top footballers, you gotta take steroids to get as strong or as fast as them.

Eh no. Shit will be made, athletes will try it and might get hurt or something. Like honestly I'd be pretty pissed if my favorite football player died trying to use performance enhancing drugs. Besides, it's more interesting to see what the human can do without the assistance of external hormones.
