The truth about paypal donations

This isn't an attack on sythe or anyone on the site, just the truth. If this was implied, you could make some serious money. All it takes is time.

As many of you might know, i ran paypal donations for a good 3 months or so. I would take the money on paypal from people, tell matthew about it, transfer it to my bank account, and then mail it to Matthew himself. The whole process took 2-3 weeks. In this time you would think people would charge back the money. No, they didn't. I of course had some guidelines. You could not donate more than 25$ was the major one. If you set a limit one what people can donate, then your chances of a chargeback are more slim. Scammers aren't going to want to deal with such a low donation rank anyways.

This all comes of course if someone decides to take the initiative and actually do the donations through paypal. And you can't say chargeback is a major thing when in reality its not. I was charged back once, and it was a mistake. He was still banned because the money was not in my account. I think in this period of time, i took in nearly 300$.

All im really saying is that if you step back and look at it, paypal donations are not impossible. They just need somebody that is willing to take there time with them, and actually look after them. You also need someone that is more active (not an attack on Matthew at all) but he is not the most active person. Of course finding someone trustworthy and active will not be an easy thing, but if you actually follow through with it you will never be hurting for server money. All im asking is you actually consider it, and not just lock this thread.

I support but I don't think there are many people up to take the time with the donations.

 

Sythe himself stopped me from doing it..said he didn't want outsider help with donations i believe.

I would do it again, but it wouldn't be free. It would be as cheap as i could make it, however.

 

Yeah I support. Finding the person to do it will be a hassle, though.

It's obvious why though. As trustworthy as you may be, there's always a risk of corruption or some other life issue that is more important than running donations. It's difficult to trust people online with others' money, especially when you are basically representing Sythe and his reputation by handling the donations.

I don't mean this in a negative way at all, just mentioning what the other sides' argument could be.

People genuinely concerned with donating can do it through WU or mail anyway.

You must not remember my shop, or must not have been around during my reign. I helped matthew collect easily over 300$ in donations within a 2-3 month span.

 

Get a 45 day delay until you get your rank so its harder to charge back, this will sort through most of the obvious scammers and reward loyal members who wants to donate.

With the right system, which I like the 45 day wait part, this could be very successful.

However, due to chargeback scares, this will most likely not be implemented.

 

I definitely support. I, myself have only been charged back by stolen paypal accounts, so if you made the donator verify that the paypal account is actually theirs, chargebacks are much less likely. I would definitely donate more if I could donate through paypal, since it's way more convenient than driving out to W.U.

 

Gosh, those stolen Paypals are SO freaking annoying. >_<

45 Day rule sounds good, but I doubt this will be implemented, as successful as your "reign" was.

Probably just too much of a hassle.

 

I hate the mail. I would donate right now if we had a quick easy way to do it. Whoevers watching the donations though needs to be on once per morning and evening at the least. It requires a ton of time and probably isn't the easiest thing ever.

If it happens I will go first ftw. If not maybe the mail will be okay...

The 45 day rule is a no go. The only rules that could actually be implemented is the "buyer" have there paypal account verified, and have a real phone number verification.

 

I support TJ 100% on that note, I've donated through him before and was really pissed when Sythe told him to end his run due to him being an insider.

To do a paypal donation it can't be hard, look at neowin they let you pay via paypal....why not put a donate button, and paypal should see that it's for a donation not trying to scam.

 

Also there's a million sites that have paypal donation buttons.

I like the phone verification though that would help cut scamming down a ton.

 

There's also another solution to this, but it's rather dramatic. People can donate through PayPal, but they have to wait two months to get their rank and perks. After this period of time it is almost impossible for a scammer to get their money back, and if they get it back before this wait period, no harm is done and their account will be banned. This will also allow people who want to actually help to help, and will string out all the impatient people who join the website and just donate for temporary trust.

Security steps could also be taken as some others mentioned.
- Only accepting donations from verified people
- Requiring phone verification
- Requiring people to be a member for X amount of days

Another option would be allowing members to anonymously donate via PayPal without receiving any ranks or perks. (Just for the sake of helping)

 

This, although I fear not as many people would donate and it would end up being worthless.
