Really? Seems to be decreasing to me, which I think is a good thing.

People like it cause they can, and no one can stop them, unfortunately. I personally never have, or ever will like it. It's too much of a cartoon, which I don't see how anyone over the age of 9 can enjoy.

I agree with that most of the cartoons created are probably childish, but others are splendid pieces of work. Death Note and Code Geass to name a few, both have splendid plots and quite a few twists.

So a 9 year old would be watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, which has graphic visualizations of torture (nails driven in to each finger joint, disembowelment while still alive, chained to a cross and being stabbed until death, etc.) and murder? Or perhaps Elfen Lied, with a heavy amount of violence usually resulting in the victim's body being separated in to more than one part? Okay then. Go on, children!

I'm not emphasising that these shows are great because of violence, they have brilliant stories, both with great morals, however graphic violence is not something a 9-year-old should be watching.

Also consider shows such as Ghost in the Shell, which involve adult themes and which are very philosophical in meaning.

    Warning: spoilers.

I've seen neither, but I'll look them up when I've got time.

Probably a favourite of mine in terms of mature-audience oriented anime is Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu - I liked the anime so much that I read all 9 of the novels and greatly anticipate the 10th, which should be released some time in the next couple of years. It's a tiny bit ecchi in terms of Haruhi's actions towards Mikuru during the first couple of episodes, but that's out of mere eccentricity and it's highly humorous. Second season was a bit disappointing with the Endless 8 story arc though.

I like shows like Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh, despite most Western people would consider them shows for young girls (which they aren't) due to all of the main characters bar a couple (Like Kimura Sensei) being female and in highschool. If you understand the jokes that are in reference to both culture and other anime you find them hilarious (and because Western people typically don't understand those jokes, you get the aforementioned assumption).

I guess it all comes down to either maturity (former) or content (latter) as to how much one can enjoy these shows. Western people just dismiss them as childish cartoons, but in hindsight they're some of the best stories I've ever seen, indefinitely better than most of the shows and movies I see come out over here.

    Childish because it is drawn?

I find it hilarious that people hate anime because of that fact, yet they absolutely LOVE things like Transformers / Transformers 2, which have really shitty storylines yet people still like them because things go "boom!". If anything, movies like that are childish for they base themselves upon childish concepts.

    I kinda agree with you.
Most of the people in my school who read and/or watch anime are nerds.
    THAT DOES NOT MEAN EVERYONE!
