So I just saw a commercial for a research institute preparing for 2012.

http://www.instituteforhumancontinuity.org/

I just saw a commercial for them...I prowled the site and saw no sign of it being a direct ad for the movie 2012 being released in November (although there is a small link in the footer to the official site of the movie) nor of it being a joke. The channel I saw it on was actually a pretty popular channel around my area as well, called The Comedy Network. I'm not convinced that the events depicted to occur in 2012 are factual, but I honestly don't know what to think about it after seeing a public commercial about this specific institute and in no way focusing towards the movie or any kind of joke.

What.
The.
Fuck.

Awkward... I doubt anything will happen. It's just a huge waste of money, time, and effort.

Nah, it doesn't end, that tale has been warped beyond belief. The Mayan calendar was arranged in "cycles". December 21st 2012 is the end of a single cycle, then it starts over. People have even taken that theory and warped it, saying that cataclysmic events occur every single time a cycle ends, which we know is false.

Oh and for the record, this isn't about the calendar. The fact about the galactic alignment is actually true, but it has not been proven that it will be cataclysmic.

Ah, just noticed it's owned by Sony. Pretty damn hard to figure out that it's a promo for their damn movie. Credit to grave :p

So I just saw a commercial for a research institute preparing for 2012.

At the beginning of one of the commercials (the one running in Canada, I believe) it shows a quick Universal Pictures slide, right before the actual commercial.
The funny thing is, A LOT of people will actually think this is real and go to that site, only finding out later that it is all a marketing campaign.

EDIT: Take a look at the bottom right of the site, it shows a bunch of other sites owned by Sony to further promote this. Clever.

People do not understand, that 2012 on the mayan calender is not the year 2012 on the eastern orthodox calender (the calender we used)

2012 according to the mayans has already passed a long long long long time ago.

But that is a genious way to advertise, after seeing it I didnt have any proof it was a movie, even though I assumed, I just had to check out the site.

I bet 9/10 people check it out :p

I've seen this ad and it doesn't look real at all. I'm fairly sure there is like a 'Rating Pending' at the end (how movie commercials are). It's a movie, I guarantee it. Almost like some of the District 9 ads.

Nostradamus is a hippy XD, he predicted the end of the world but it isnt in 2012 when he predicted it.

They looked in the bible for patterns that spelled out clues the world will end in 2012, so thats another reason why people believe in it, but you can find anything if you want to,

I used that online thing to find predictions in the bible, apparantly Obama is Gay :0, with hitler :0

I'm pretty sure it's hype for the movie. They have stuff at the bottom about it and come on, anyone smart enough to...design a website and run a commercial knows it's all bullshit.

Don't worry, I thought the same thing for a while. I even went to theihc.com or whatever to check it out. After seeing it I was all worried like "Shit..is it really gonna happen?" Haha. Anyways, I looked at the website, and it looked somewhat legit. A couple days later I saw the commercial though, and realized that at the end they say "This film is not yet rated" or something.

Pretty damn hard to figure out it's a movie, I agree -_-

"No purchase necessary. This Contest starts at blah blah blah..."

Its fake.

Well, worst case scenario; the sun burns out (since the Sun is in fact a star, and stars have been known to burn out in violent explosions) and we will all die instantly within about 7 minutes (I believe that's how long it takes for the Sun’s rays to reach Earth- at the speed of light.) All the Planets will eventually freeze over in a relatively short time. All life or possibility of life in this galaxy will end. But that should be painless. Or maybe when the Sun explodes it will sets the Earth's atmosphere on fire and we all melt into cinder- that might sting. Oh and if we don't melt, the extinction of the sun would disrupt gravity and probably send us hurling further into the darkness until we hit another planet. This would cause the earth to shatter into pieces....Also I've heard the sun gets about a mile closer to the Earth each year, eventually the gravitational pull might be strong enough to continually suck us in slowly in a way that we cook at a snail’s pace. Look on the bright side, at least our meat will be tender.
There are many theories but it’s almost impossible to say what exactly will happen because. Personally, I think it's all shit I just felt like scaring some kiddies.
