Opinions on Razer Book 13?

Hi all,
I'm looking for a new daily driver. I'm looking for a productivity machine.
I want something that is powerful enough to connect a monitor/mouse/keyboard to it and use it as a desktop when i'm at home, but also portable enough so that I can work on the go.
I don't game or do any sort of CAD/editing, but I do consume a lot of media and always have many tabs and programs running simultaneously.

I'm liking the look of the razer book 13. Other contenders would be the xps 13.
I know the m1 chip macbooks are superior to these but I want to stick with windows.


Looking to spend around $1500

Only other laptops I think you should look at is the dell xps 15 or 17

 

Would rather a 13” for portability

 

They're basically the same laptop, the only difference I can really see is that the Razer has better IO but is a bit thicker, too. Depends what you want I guess.

The specs on both in your price range aren't great. Would you consider putting out a bit more to get up to a 512 SSD at the very least? You'd probably blow through 256GB in no time. Dell lets you customize the laptop you order quite a bit, so instead of adding $800 onto your budget to get a better Razer, you can add $100 or whatever just for the 512GB SSD on the Dell. Just make sure you buy a bunch of dongles if you go that route since it looks like it only has USB-C.

I'd prefer to not need so many dongles tbh. Also I hardly use up any space on my computers, so storage is not an issue for me at all.
But thanks for helping me conclude that these laptops are basically just substitutes and i'll just go with my preference I guess - thanks again

 

they both have microsd slots if more storage is needed and pretty much identical specs. I dont think there are any better options out there for laptops.

 

Hey Cherub, I've been looking at laptops too. Tired of this MacBook Pro. Did you get anything? If so, how has it been treating you?

 

Bought the £2k razor book pro and did not mesh well with the keyboard and speakers were worse than expected (expected it to be shit anyways). Sold for £950 on eBay, nice.

Get the new g14 they’re good according to my friends who bought them.

edit: it was plenty powerful enough though, to be fair. And looked pretty.

 

I dont understand how razer is still in business. Everything they make is always low quality and overpriced. It always ends up breaking within the first few months of being used.

 

Guess they invest in advertisement and design rather than hardware etc

 

razer products most of time overpriced. Only product i use from razer is their mouse deathadder (thats best mouse i have ever got). specs on the book is good enough (if u were looking for the model with gtx 1650 ti) but still overpriced. Imo Asus has the best laptops.

 

the build quality on the 13 is good imo, it's like a gaming macbook. If it's what you're after, I say it's a good purchase. I used my friends, and the specs definitely are there. It's thin enough, which I assume is a deal breaker for lots.

 

I'm using an M1 Macbook Air for work rn and the thing's a beast. For anyone looking at this thread for guidance, consider moving away from Windows if you're after productivity. I'd never use this thing as my main machine since software compatibility is big for me (and is more a gripe with MacOS than anything, their x86 and x64 emulation is actually top notch) but if I didn't game and didn't do a lot of Windows-specific coding I'd probably buy myself an M1.

 

Would you have preferred the Pro if money was no object?

 

If money was no object then yeah for sure but there isn't really a point. The Pro has what, higher screen brightness and active cooling? Not worth the extra cash imo. I guess my boss feels the same way since this was an upgrade from my 2016 MB Pro, and he got me the air lol

 

I was more thinking along the lines of the touchbar (or some other features), I know some people prefer to just have f keys and thus chose the air over pro

 

I haven't really noticed honestly. Having a convenient shortcut to show desktop was basically the only thing I used my old touchbar for, and even then with the regular F keys all I have to do now is cmd + F3. /shrug
