End to OSRS Services?

Cut directly from the Gielinor Gazette August 2020 will this be the beginning of the end of runescape service providing?

Nope. They said the same thing about botting in 2007, nothing happened. It’s to motivate those who are complaining, give them hope. In reality they don’t give a damn about these services as long as bonds are bought ect.

In other words, you tell those kids who complain what they want to hear to make them happy.

Nah, it's going to take a significant hit for sure, but die? Nope. There are still A LOT of people out there like me who are lazy asses who cbf to do quests and level stuff like agility.

I completely doubt Jagex is going to go strict with everything à la Inferno as it's going to take too much resources that isn't going to benefit them that much in the end.

 

I think Discord servers and such might take a temporary hit for the comming months, with servers being closed just like in the gambling scene. Other than that I don't think Jagex can do that much to stop the services industry. Let's hope nothing serious happens!

 

Nah, there is a lot of providers and they’ll find a way unless they develop some sort of IP block.

 

They care, but the question is: are these servers in their eyes "damaging" enough to spend resources and take (legal?) action. In my eyes, the way they handle gold selling sites is a joke. I mean literally Bogla was shut down and the day after Bogla had a new site under a different name with "From The Creators Of Bogla". If they can't afford to shut down gold sites, they probably can't afford to tackle services.

This is sadly the problem with Jagex's game: It's so easy to exploit a smaller sized company. If discords had this kind of "negative" impact for games under big publishers like Blizzard (Net Worth ~15b Compared To Jagex's 350m Worth), they would be handled swiftly. Jagex can't do that I'm assuming or all the gold sites and stuff would be shut down. Gold sites have been around for forever and it looks like they are going to stay around forever.

Depending on discord's stance on this opinion (websites are a different story), I think it is a real possibility should Jagex choose to tackle this problem that all of our discord be shut down.

What I think will happen: They will tighten up on security in-game by putting a bigger focus on catching people who are RWT. So many of RS services are Venezuelan, and I know from experience, if an IP from Venezuela shows up on an account, it will be banned. This happens a lot when VPNs don't come with a "killswitch" (AKA when the VPN fails and the true IP is shown). The resolution in their eyes could come in the form of a change to the account sharing rule, or just behind the scenes tracking of RWT activity.

 

Pretty much. I don't think they're losing anything with account services anyway. It's mostly just because Reddit r/2007scape likes to cry and complain about services on Discord.

 

I don't think they can do anything other than ban accounts.

I have been thinking a lot on this...

Realistically we have to look at this from a total business point of view, I cant personally see jagex investing the amount of money required to take down large services, this would require multiple new staff, investment in new systems and ways of tracing the types of people who provide these types of services.

They can't just start banning players for taking these types of services as long term effects on the player base and membership income would simply diminish, realistically I could see them addressing players having certain statistics rolled back to a set time/date.

Now the logistics with the whole discord side and even youtube side, in the grand scheme of things, these are multi billion pound companies, do we think that they will start banning certain servers or taking them down whilst potentially threatening a decent part of the income it earns from nitro users + servers.. i just cant see it i can imagine the conversation just being a no from the outset.

The only probable way that Jagex could make a difference.
1. They roll back individual players statistics who are using these types of services, thus to leading to teamviewer/parsec based skilling.
2. They limit account logons to certain device ids/ip addresses specific in your authentication section on the account management page.
3. They just pretend to make the world of difference to the people who are complaining and realistically nothing can be done, few players/service providers will be "publicly banned".

The biggest threat to most service owners is potentially taking down the discords, but even then it would just move over to another platform if this was persistent.

Time will tell.. i just cant see it working and there will always be a way around it unless its something even more extreme. If anything i could potentially see costs for the end customer being increased for most services.

 

End of Services is the end of Runescape so when Runescape ends than services end LOL

Same approach used by Casinos to make you think they'll catch it all.

 

They will likely not be effected much at all. Services are something that can always operate even when all other forms of RWT are taken away.

It would be extremely difficult to determine if someone is just playing from a different location or VPN than actually receiving services.

 

I have heard theyve been cracking down on infernal capes tho....

some bigger hosts will get taken out
but small fishes will stick around
