[Approved] Make A New Channel For Spam Forums On Discord.

They would still give more useful information than asking people to answer a bunch of semi-rhetorical questions.
Edit: The only response we've ever had with reasoning for why nothing has been done is "Occasionally the discord becomes a clown fiesta but that is part of the character.", so yeah, it would actually give a LOT of info that is clearly being withheld.

 

Opt-in would work for me. An open channel where clearly abrasive/toxic behaviour leads to people being removed would also work. All I'm looking for is the ability to have a conversation with someone and not deal with the SF aspects. The fitness channel springs to mind as a good example of that.

Regardless of Sythe's individual views, both sides could easily be accommodated.

 

The problem is not being called a pussy or a bitch. The problem is that a small group of people actively like to cyber bully selected targets. Moderators solution until now has just been "you can choose not to participate in the discord". Way to go! You'd rather rob users the chance to integrate better into the community than to address the minority of meat heads, because you think it's fun to watch shit being thrown. It's disgusting.

Why would it be the other way around? The owner of the website is literally one of the contributors to the toxicity of the discord. Keep it the way it is

 

Support, if this idea gets implemented maybe we could also reduce regulations on regular spam channel in the future


Also maybe a "hardcore" rank for the spam channel where any snowflake behavior results in rank removal so you're not allowed to view/post in the spam channel?

 

Support, I’d love to see this. I’ve long since stopped using the discord because it’s seen as an extension of the spam forum. When really, it is a replacement for the website. We have continually moved to a more rapid pace environment, discord allows for instant messaging where online message boards are too clunky to allow for that. This means community activity in discord is starting to take over, not supplement. I have long since stopped using the discord because every time I speak, without fail, it’s extremely toxic (for example: the n word being spammed). This may appeal to some, but others find this repulsive and choose to find other communities to spend their time with.

 

I got a mention indirectly woohoo! I think this is a good start tbh but why would you call it safe space makes it sound super cringe. I think sythe rules should apply to that channel and the spam channel should be directly underneath it. Also I should be unblacklisted it was a stupid decision in the first place and the 2 weeks are over as well as me being unbanned from the discord because what even was the reason? Anyways its clear Sythe himself doesn't want a proper channel because hates politically correct stuff so it probably won't happen because all the mods are yes men and won't even talk to him about things they think are wrong which I noticed recently. There is a reason why donations and active members are going down.

 

Would like to bring up a few points on this.

1. It should be the other way around. It is a minority that has contributed to the extreme toxic environment. I suggest making them opt in for a channel that is specifically made for shit posting. This idea however will get no support from those people since they would not have as fun in a channel where they're alone. They would not get the attention they're craving. But I only think that's fair.

2. Calling it #SAFE-SPACE is not ideal because it has a negative connotation. You could literally just call it #General or #Sythe and have a #Shitpost channel below.

 

Why is the discord an extension of the spam forum rather than Sythe.org at large? Like others have mentioned in this thread, having #Sythe, a spam forum-esque channel, as the primary medium for discussion isn't a welcoming environment for new users. It's not even a matter of being "offended." If the first thing a user who came here to buy RSGP saw was incessant shit talking, I find it hard to believe they would think it's a conducive environment for business. I can also bet they wouldn't feel compelled to become invested in the community either.

@Pikachu said they placed the previously implemented channel at the bottom. That makes a discernible difference (i.e. real world example). As he stated, place both channels together near the top, and things will turn out differently.

Treat #Sythe as an extension of the forum at large, and create a new channel (#spam) right underneath as an extension of the spam forum. This way, there is virtually no grey area as we can leverage the already established rules and precedent for the moderation, or lack thereof, of those specific channels.

I'm sure you and the other staff have handled hundreds of spam reports related to "excessive profanity, insults, or derogatory comments." Obviously the staff are all unique individuals who handle those reports in their own way, but I doubt each moderator's decisions stray far from one another. The moderators can deal with discord violations at their own discretion, as they do with forum violations.

I think there room for a general-chat and spam-chat channels.
either or being an opt in is fine (as users can simple mute an individual channel they do not want to see)
The concern of sythe staff feeling forced to moderate channels they don't agree what i can understand as i'm sure sythe staff has enough work as it is without baby sitting fights.

What about a community moderator role (much like CDT) where they don't have any power to ban punish users other than limiting there access to general chat? These community moderators could than handle the complaints of discord general without involving sythe staff.

This would also allow sythe spam to operate the way it currently does as there is an appeal to an unfiltered space that i'm sure some people like.

Now I am all for the @BlackBlasses opt-in idea as well. A lot of you asked "Why have them opt in to the non-spam channel?" The simple answer I thought of was moderation.

You'd either have to get it coded (which takes a while) or expect mods to be on 24/7 to protect you from bullies on the internet. Now don't get me wrong.. I get it.. Spam forum isn't for everybody.. But Discord itself provides you with many options such as "block", "Turn off notifications", "Leave server", and probably much more.

This had been suggested multiple times over many years. I find it weird that mods are finally curbing into the "we are all being harassed and it should stop". I think personally that the discord at large should reflect the site and not a niche part of it. I do agree that banter and fun should still be able to happen, but use of racism and slander/harassment in a general fashion really belongs in a separate channel. I like @BlackBlasses idea of a opt-in where you can decide what you can see on the discord as that would stop people from making stupid reports because of things that are said on discord. I haven't been very active recently so I can't speak to lengths of what has been going on, but I'll assume that it has been worse than usual and that perhaps 2020 is the year of change. With that, I think main general chat should be welcoming AND fun, but doesn't allow for harassment/other stupid things that go on now, and a separate channel that is a MW2 Rust 360 no-scope FFA.
