'too expensive' comes from people who are not willing to pay for quality work most likely, or are simply on a low budget, and you should never compromise your pricing for people who can't afford your work. I wouldn't worry about them. There are many customers/clients out there who will pay for experienced people.

I speak this from my experience as I charge market/industry prices for my services, and what I charge isn't really that high in comparison to people who are a little older than me.

See I actually work in the industry as a graphic designer and marketing manager, so I earn a full time salary and only do sythe work on the side.

So my rates come in comparison to what I earn professionally, as all the work I do on sythe is in the evenings in my spare time or on the weekends. I've had people who are willing to pay big for decent sized projects on sythe but most people refuse to pay normal rates, as they see sythe as a 'Gaming platform' I guess.

I can openly say how much I was charging for the above work. The rate I was looking for was '500m 07' as they wanted to pay in 07 currency.

Now 500m 07 may seem very pricey but if you break it down, its actually pennies. Price depends on a lot of things. How many individual items included, colours, depth of colouring and detail etc. This piece of work took me around 40-45 hours to do. That was 10 evenings of around 4 hours. Idea generating, mood boarding and then the final piece etc. That’s like 8-9 dollars an hour. So its not much at all.

 

Oh I see, and 500m 07 for 40-45 hours of work is really not that much.

I personally charge per project, not per hour. Per hour you actually make a lot less money. This is something I learned from experienced and senior directors and designers in the industry. The youtube channel 'The Futur' even states this. But nonetheless, since this is a side thing for you, it's not a priority. But you certainly should have charged a lot more. [if this wasn't because of that sythe user]. I'd say only 10% of the users on this forum understand that quality/industry-standard work costs $ and time.

At the end of the day, nice to see another person here who works full-time as a Designer

Really astonishing semi realism art, a lot of talent man. As Mister Slyther said, I believe with your skill you deserve higher rates. What you're doing is a skilled job, not everyone will be able to produce the same quality as yours even if they were working for the same price.

Yeah after some time now, I came to realise that people on Sythe that want good quality work are willing to pay higher rates. I mean after all I sold the first piece of art for 350m 07 which most people would laugh at in terms of price.
It's just about finding the right people. Since I do this as a little hobby, I usually turn down most jobs as well unless they pay a fair amount or are interesting projects.

The customers that wanted the above work had no problem paying higher rates.
