If those are the games you want to play buying a 4870 is a big waste of money. At most go with a 4850.

Yes it would. Although don't expect to play on max settings without lag with that 9600GT.

Get an 8800GT for less, or an ati 4850

    Get a cheaper processor
Spend more on the video card.

A 9600 can play every game on the market.

It won't be able to play all games as Highest/Max detail/graphics setting, But it will be able to play them all.

It will just about play Crysis at Medium Graphics.

If you can stretch to a 8800Gts/x then do so, but a 9600 is plentiful to play all the games.

9600 cannot play half the games on max quality unless you got a 1024*786 resolution.
