It's not about the gender of the one assaulting you. If the person is using excessive violence you should defend yourself. Can you get out of there without taking/dealing any damage, do that.

 

The male shouldn't hit back.. in my religion we aren't allowed to do that as I am a muslim but having said that if it is bad to the point you fear for your life than you need to defend yourself but my advice is to take yourself out of that situation ASAP and find a solution.

What you need to remember is, it's a girl/women. Hard to say. Equality is all about respect. You can't be disrespected by ____ then be condemned for retaliating.
