    What's RAM?
It stands for Random Access Memory. Here is a good definition of it.

    Where is it?

Most commonly on the motherboard. I myself have seen RAM slots that were plugged into the motherboard, and not actually on it, but there aren't too many computers like that. RAM is in sticks, thus "sticks of RAM". They sit in slots on your motherboard and are easily pushed/pulled out with two switches, one on each side of the slot which you can push and the RAM will be released.

This is what desktop RAM looks like:

This is what laptop RAM looks like:

Note: Removing RAM in a laptop is a little bit different than from a desktop. In this guide, I'll cover how to change it in a desktop.

    Guide time.

^^ That computer has RAM right on the edge of the motherboard. As you can see, there are 4 RAM slots but only 2 are filled. You can also see the switches on each side of the slots. If you push each one, then the RAM will be pushed out of the slot and you can pull it out and place your new RAM in. Be careful where you put RAM, because it's very sensitive to static electricity and will be damaged if exposed to it. Push the new RAM in, and the switches should lock back in place. Voila ;)

Note2: There are different types of RAM. Make sure you have the right kind before trying to change it.

How about some constructive criticism instead of simple useless gratification.

Blupig - Remember when writing guides in the future that although you aren't permitted to copy guides, you are welcome to consult outside sources for information, because how else would anyone learn anything that they know? Try not to just write guides on your current knowledge since for one, it is not as complete as it could have been with some good quick research and also it minimizes the benefit it could have had on readers. The best thing about User Education Guides is probably that they are written by people the same age as those reading them and for this reason it may be easier to process the matter it contains.

    My suggestions for this guide:
    • Explanation/description of different types of RAM including but not limited to SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3.
    • Talk about different speeds of RAM PCxxx/PCxxxx and their compatibility requirements in terms of motherboards (fast enough FSB to exploit their full power and correct DIMM slots) and processors.
    • Briefly outlining additional technologies like Dual-Channel or the new Triple-Channel RAM configurations would also be an excellent addition to the guide.
    • Anything else you might come across in regards to RAM that is useful and may or may not be well known.

He wasn't telling you what to do, Infected. It wasn't mean to be offensive, but in all reality you didn't provide any criticism at all for him at all. What will gratification do for somebodies work? Nothing.

On subject, good guide. Although you definately could have explained more about the compatibility issues and such within the guide. Could have used a bit more length. Well done though.

a decent guide, but it missing a at least one very ciritical detail. You mention ESD, but not how to prevent it. If a person isn't grounded properly, they could fry their entire system. I would suggest explaining how one can properly ground themselves and how to use Anti-Static Wristbands.

Yes, he should go into how to find what type of RAM you need and where to get it.

Nullware he goes way back. But of coarse you don't have to listen to him.

Meh, I'll keep it in mind for the future. I'd make it better if I was still on the User Education team, but right now I cba. No point.

Actually there was a hack and a some accounts were deleted, that's why a lot of members have a January 2007 join date so I was around a bit longer than that. There's a sticky that says you should include reasoning and details when proactively rating a guide and while it isn't mandatory it helps make the section better.

    1. You have the same intelligence and are the same person with/without the rank.
    2. Cleaning up and creating better guides could get you back on the Team if that's what you want, but it's also nice to teach more useful information they might not be so inclined to want to read about elsewhere.

For laptops it's more of a pain, but it has the same concept. On my Acer Aspire 5100 I need to remove a large panel on the bottom of the PC, then the RAM sits horizontal to the motherboard in these "clip" type things. There are still switches though which release the actual RAM.

Rank or no rank, you should still have the highest quality guide possible.
On the criticism part, you've got the information down as it is informative and easy for people to read, but try spicing it up a little bit so people don't loose interest as their reading it. Good start though, 7/10.

    Great guide.

You need to make it tidy it up a bit because I was struggling to read it.

    8/10.

Not a bad guide, however you could have gone into a lot more detail in some places. And if you are not covering laptops then you should have made the title something like: Changing Ram on A Desktop Computer.

The only way to be and stay on the UE team is to make good guides. Being lazy and skimping won't do you any favours, and to be honest you shouldn't have to be on the UE team to put your best effort in. This section is to educate others, why should having a little book under your name affect your work ethic?
