Transgender is an mental illness, change my mind

As title says.
Transgender/other genders EXCEPT male/female, are part of mental illness.

Honestly curious what others think of this!
Do you agree/disagree and why

Such a touchy subject. I agree, though. No species outside of humans have any notion of males wanting to be females, and vice versa (in terms of the roles they play within their communities, parenting, etc.).

At the end of the day, I tend to stick to the argument of DNA coded you one way or the other, biologically.

 

Exactly, you can't change basic biology

Trying to sit on the fence here, but I can't help but think it is part of a mental illness, perhaps the mental illness is often derrived by a lack of acceptence?

^ That's not even a valid argument or even a valid statement. Obviously everyone shoes are different and unless you have a mental illness you wouldn't get it. That's like saying the yellow crayon is yellow. Do you have an opinion one way or another.

 

I'm curious as to the train of thought that made you decide to post in this particular subforum.

I understand that "health" is part of this subforum, but I'm sure you fully understand that "health" doesn't equal "debate".

I think it fits the symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder, which is a mental illness

 

Lul the media makes it sound so prevalent when it isn't. They're people who think that changing their sex will fix all their issues. When it won't.

 

I believe it is already treated as a mental disorder. We treat it by letting the individuals effected transition to their desired gender. We should be supportive and less stigmatizing of transexual people as they just want to live their life their own way and it’s not really effecting anybody else. There needs to be more love in the world. We’re all one people regardless of our differences.

 

Is being transgender a mental illness? NO. If you believe so, then I doubt you've truly considered what it is to be transgender. Also, try a google search. Is mental illness prevalent among transgender people? Yes ... think about why this may be. Are sentiments of this thread contributing to high rates of mental illness among transgender people? Certainly. Is transgender experience correlated with (& in some people contributing to) gender dysphoria? Of course. If you think that mere transgender state is equivalent to mental disorder, then you're sorely mistaken and, I assume, haven't experienced discussion with happy, healthy, transgender folk.

Comparing social complexities of humans to the animal kingdom at large will hardly bring insight. Another misconception of this thread: sex is not gender. Sex is biological (emerging directly from DNA). Gender is socially constructed (mental) identification. Consider a transgender person, with full awareness of their biological sex and its permanency, who happily identifies as the gender typically construed by an alternate sex. How is that a mental disorder? Mental disorder is, by common definition, marked by innate impairment and/or distress.

 

I personally disagree with the whole subject however I also disagree with the harassing and negativity that is shown towards them. It's something they can't change and we can't change although I do agree on it being a mental disorder because biologically you aren't brought into the world to want to change your natural purpose, but I feel like society is so quick to gang up on people these days and I agree with the above that there needs to be more love in the world.

I'm just worried that things will get even more out of hand, how long before we no longer give people genders at birth and just tag them with a biological status? Seems that year by year more and more anomalies are becoming the norm, this whole 'binary' thing is complete rubbish as well, in my opinion it was started by someone or a group of people who didn't feel accepted so they wanted to stand out or attention-seek.

But please don't give me any backlash as my thoughts aren't meant to hurt anyone, I don't hate nor wish any negativity to transgenders, I just don't believe in their cause and lifestyle.

 

I don't think its a mental illness. I think its just the way their mind works. You can't really change it nor do they even know its wrong or right as much as you and I know we are wrong to be female or male. Put yourself in their position, if they think in their brain they are female but they were born male, then obviously they'll try to change to female. But what if you are male but really in other people's mind you are female? You know what I mean?

 

When I read titles like these, I am not even bothered to try to change one's mind since it's already fixed.

 

Sounds like your mind is fixed as well. Open communication has untold benefit.

 

I have a very open mind and have learned, that these discussions tend to lead no where. One part tries to convince the other that they're right and the discussion goes back and forth without leading anywhere.

 

This is probably one of the best ways to descriptions I have seen and heard, just wish more people understand it this way too.

 

This is really well said and really describes why transgender folk are struggling today and why we need to be more supportive of them.

This is awesome and a great win for trans folk who are marginalized.
