Should we change up member of the month:

whats a bronze/silver/golden metal?

 

Maybe it's an idea to revamp the monthly community (now MotM) award into something bigger? Our current yearly community awards gain major traction. Hosting one on a monthly basis (maybe switch up the different awards every month?) could give the same effect.

So let's say month 1 you have the awards:
- Member of the month
- Best artist of the month
- Most helpful of the month

and then month 2 would consist of:
- Member of the month
- Best newcomer
- Most supportive

The winners could get a correlating minirank depending on what award they win, or a similar price.

Just spitballing ideas, but to maintain traction on these kind of community awards it's important to keep switching up the different awards.

there are a ton of members who help people, are active, and do stuff for the community, but people are still going to generally vote for their friends because its more convenient and easier to think about. your friends are going to stand out to you cause they bought u nitro rather than the person who donated $1k to repayment fund.

i think the way motm is setup is just digging its own grave.

Maybe try swapping the process. Instead of it being an open voting process where anyone can nominate anyone for any reason, make it closed. CDT/Staff could have a thread where they nominate people who they notice doing positive things throughout the month then you all discuss and come to a conclusion of like 3-5 people, and then the public could vote and think about reasons and then post why they voted for someone from the final list. A lot of people probably click on it but cant think of someone right away so they ignore it, but if they click on it and maybe notice a name already, they might be more inclined to say something or rather have a reason pop up in their head. Just an idea


Its been dead for months so somethings gotta change if you want better results, and/or just discontinue it and focus on more/better events

This 100%. How it stands, MotM has turned into a popularity contest. I don't have the answer as to how.. but I think it would help if the "who is a nominee" were revised.

 

I think this is a fairly good idea.
Switch it up from month to month with a different theme. I realize there’s a yearly vote for all of the subcategories but “member of the month” is pretty vague and as mentioned above people just vote for friends, etc.

Setting up a monthly category will narrow down voting and releasing the nexts month’s category will give something for people to work toward.

What you’ve proposed was how MoTM was initially done. However, having many varying categories to vote users into proved redundant, as it was far too difficult to, A) vote for different people relative to each category, B) the less-desirable categories (for lack of a better term) proved far too inconsistent, relative to justifying users warranting a nomination – meaning, realistically finding a discernible difference between all the varying categories, compared to that of the actual MoTM category was not present. As, the ideology behind the MoTM winner is a user that actively encompasses all traits that would have resulted in them being voted into all the others, C) activity is not high enough to warrant other categories, and D) sub-categories are present in the annual user-awards, and reintroducing them on a monthly basis detracts from the value/prestige the annual awards have.

I think we’re making this too complicated. If anything, I would suggest that each staff member (the reason behind having ALL staff members partake, is that, it provides for all perspectives to be taken into account, as many a time, Admins are aware of what certain users are doing/contributing, that Sectionals may not be, and vice versa) and CDT member nominate a user they believe to be warranting the title of ‘MoTM’. Upon each staff member and CDT member having presented their nomination, the top 3 are polled to the public with reasons outlining WHY each member was selected, and the winner is then, the ‘MoTM’.

Regardless of the voting process, the element of everyone being unbiased and objective in nature is one that will be impossibly-difficult to achieve – due to the nature of forums and public votes in general. This way however, it may prove to be less of a popularity contest, as I’d like to believe that our CDT team and staff members will maintain a level of integrity. Finally, the reason for a public vote to nominate the winner from the top 3, is so that all users have some involvement and power to an extent, which ensures that the winner is not arbitrarily decided upon behind close doors, without the broader user base knowing why.

NB: potentially change the process from a monthly award, to bi-monthly, with the main event being the annual awards.

 

I believe a Sectional member of the month should be made this would then put 'x' amount of sectional members of the month into a MoTM pot at which point people would vote for their member of the month out of that pot.

So if you are a multi-serviced individual who has a finger in all pies on sythe you would be able to get a sectional member vote for every section giving you more of a chance to get the MoTM.

 

People lose interest in MoTM because it's a popularity contest - similar to yearly awards. Deserving users will get swept under the rug whilst friends will vote for other friends. Now don't get me wrong, people can obviously pick users for their own reasoning - but make sure the reasoning is actually valid.

Some sample suggestions:

• Have a participation point system similar to SoTM. If you meet x amount of points by the end of the year, you will be entered in xxx.
• To ensure the above isn't abused, make users link/post specific examples of how their nominee has helped the community that month. Don't take half assed examples as a valid reason for their nomination.
• Monthly raffles for participants.
• Add a minirank for users that participate in multiple MoTM (requirements?)

Example of a bad nomination: I vote for ABM because he writes well.

Yes, this seems like it requires more effort from the community, but if the reward is tempting enough, people will put in the effort. Perhaps discuss with CDT and come up with a few ways to change MoTM, then have the public vote on which one they'd like.
