Should I buy a mobile air conditioning?

Title. I have an air cooler now, but it went defect quite quickly. Was worth like 80EUR anyways, so the real question here is should I invest more money into a proper mobile air conditioner?

Upsides:
- I hate the warm temperatures, so it's cooler then.

Downsides:
- You'll get used to the low temperatures, so going outside might give a bang to my head.
- It costs alot of energy I guess, so might get a bigger bill.

Anything ever had a mobile air conditioning? Any tips/advices?

 

Yeah @Wortel, I’ve had one for years now. Bought it right after I graduated college. The first house I lived in had shit A/C so I was forced to buy it. I used it daily back then. Had it for about 3 years now, and it still runs like new. I’ve put hundreds, if not thousands, of hours on it.
Totally worth it. Even if you just use it on those REALLY hot days, when you’re hungover (waking up in a hot and room is the worst haha), etc. I can post the one I have if you want me to. Think I paid like $250 USD for it.

Here's the unit I have. $450 on BestBuy. As stated, I bought it brand new thru Craigslist for around $250. I'd advise you to check the specs and do your homework. It works VERY well, but can probably find a cheaper version that works just as well.

What do you mean by ‘do your homework’? To ensure it cools my entire appartment or? Any comment on the up and downsides I listed? Thanks so far btw.

 

By doing your homework, I just mean researching BTU (cooling unit of power) and determine the right size for your needs. The unit I have produces 10K BTU’s. It’s heavy duty. I could honestly do for one that’s smaller and lighter. How big is your apartment and/or the room that you would have it in? What would your budget be?

Your upsides: I don’t see a downside to your upside. The one I have works great and I highly recommend.

Your downsides:
I don’t think you’ll get used to the cooler temps to the point where it’ll affect you when you go outside. I don’t ever have that issue, ha.
As for my power bill: My power bill tends to be higher from running my central AC for 24hrs a day. I only run my portable AC unit on certain days, as mentioned in my previous post.
However, two summers ago I ran it every single night while I slept. I did not notice a sizable increase in my power bill during those months from the unit. The one I have might be good on power though.. but I’m sure any modern portable AC unit would be.

 

Were you able to sleep when the AC was on? As I recall correctly it might make quite the noise right?

My appartment is like 57m², not yet sure how much m³ that is. Preferably I'd ofcourse have it cool my entire home, but yeah.

 

I can sleep with it on. I’m used to some noise though because I generally sleep with a floor fan on to drown out any noise from cars passing by, etc. the one I have is pretty loud.

The smaller ones/ones that put out less BTU’s are much quieter. One of my old roommates had one that was VERY quiet. Almost couldn’t even tell it was on.

Okay, so your apartment is around 650 sq. feet (sorry, I’m in USA). About the same size as my last apartment. The 10K BTU one would definitely cool your entire apartment very well and efficiently. I’d only get one that big and powerful if you’re planning on leaving in the living room. If you’re wanting to keep it in your bedroom, get one that’s more compact and less powerful. It’ll take up less space, less power, and won’t be as loud. It probably won’t cool all the way out into the living room though.

 

I don’t really have a window in my bedroom aside from a small one above the door so I guess I gotta put it in the livingroom anyways. There’s a window though it’s in the front side so it’ll be very ugly but that’s whatever. That means it’ll be in the front of my appartment whereas my bedroom is in the back. So I guess I do need a heavy one anyways for it to reach that far?

 

You're crazy for not already having one of those if your house dosen't have AC.

 

Well I live in The Netherlands, but now that the climate etc is shifting we're having quite more warmer days. I'm renting an appartment so I can't have an AC unit, but can buy a mobile one.

 

Might as well have one, even if it's only for super hot days. I didn't use mine often, but I sure was thankful when temps went above 90F. I used mine for only one room, though I believe it could have cooled the entire house, as my dad had bought it when his store didn't have A/C for two weeks.

 

Any clue how it was called?

Yeah, you'll want one that's 10K BTU so that the cooling effect can reach your bedroom. You're in the Netherlands you said? Name me some stores overthere (We have Walmart in the USA) and I can help you find a good brand one.

 

Coolblue.nl, Bol.com, Klimate.nl and Vakhandeljanssen.nl seem to be the ones who sell the best aircos.

 

I checked out coolblue. Any of the 9001-12000 BTU ones should work well. Just find the one with the most/best reviews that is in your price range. GL!

 

I bought a portable AC unit for my room a few years ago, one of the best purchases i've made. I did notice an increase in my electricity bill, but I only use this unit during the later summer months in the CA, USA. Economically speaking, its not really worth it for me to have central air where I live as it would be so rarely used.

The unit cost me about $300, its usually good to buy these during the winter as they are on sale

 

Are window units not a common thing in The Netherlands? They're much cheaper generally then mobile units.

 

Window units are much heavier, bulkier, can’t be picked up and moved, out away, etc. He said he rents a unit so he can’t do that too.
