Top 3 anime of all time and why?

Also subs vs dubs?

I have a lot of mates who ONLY watch subs.. but there are a few animes I personally feel are better dubbed.

My top 3 are.

1. Samurai champloo - I fucking love that it's short and sweet and it ticks all the boxes for me... dope hip hop vibe and sick soundtrack to go with it. My number 1!

2. Full metal - was one series that doesn't rely on battle scenes to capture you in the story. A real entry to anime for a lot of my mates

3. Death note - really made me think. There were moments I felt I could predict what was happening and ended up pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong. I feel towards the end it dipped off, for that reason it was not a strong third and in future I see this position being overtaken.

 

Subs. Always subs.

1. HxH. Masterpiece anime despite slow start. The parts later on are really amazing.

2. Code Geass. It's like death note where the focus is on the smart main dude. Death note went downhill with the 2nd part, while CG is pretty much consistently great all the way through.

3. Mob Psycho - This one's underrated as hell.

Tied 3. FMA. Great story and characters. The story progression is what's really captivating though.

i only watch subbed now, but most of the older anime (for example YYH) do have pretty good dubbed. I have watched YYH and Inuyasha in dubbed long time ago.

One piece i've watched bits and pieces of. I think need to give it a proper watch. Its some of my friends' favourite anime.

Yeh I enjoyed Naruto. I seemed to like Bleach slightly more tho, especially towards the middle.

Havnt heard of any of these... cheers for sharing I will add these to the list also. Ill watch some snippets to see which ones i'll enjoy.

Subs. I realized that I didn't like Anime as a genre because I was watching it with English dubs, and the reactions were really corny, the timing was off, and the script was usually lazy feeling. Then I realized that I was missing a lot of the natural content because it was animated in time with Japanese, it felt corny and fake because the expressions and reactions didn't match the syntax and timing of the English language. After watching it in subs, and rewatching a few animes that I was disappointed with, I realized how much higher quality the original versions are. Additionally, I realized the ones I DID like before switching to subs were because they were animated in english, not just dubbed over, like FMA and Avatar the last airbender (ATLA is already an english cartoon, but was influenced enough that I'd consider it anime-esque)

Bro, perfectly worded. I feel the couple Animes I enjoyed in english seemed to of had a large enough following in western countries.. so either the quality of dub was superb or like ATLA, it was an english based cartoon. Dubs sometimes also work for me when i'm half asleep and still want to hear what's going on but often I felt disconnected by the expressions in relation to the scenes themselves. Tokyo Ghoul i've heard really good things about, so more to add to the list. Appreciate the response.

TG anime is good? Might be the first time I've heard someone say this.

TG manga is million times better.

 

I've heard TG is good from quite a few friends. But then again, I don't know if they're referring to the Manga.

 

The animation quality is mediocre, and it skips a LOT of scenes from manga.

 

I loved all 3 of your top 3! But They're not even in my top 5. lol.

1. Berserk (Film Trilogy). They didn't do a very good job adapting the 90's anime, the films tell the same story, and are MUCH better. The new Anime also left a lot to be desired, but I was still obsessed with it just because it was Berserk. The old anime was good in general imo, but the movies are 10x better + tell the manga's story better, it's the only anime I've liked enough to go read the entire manga (though I'm way behind now).

2. Dragon Ball (including Z, super, I found GT boring and couldn't get into it. Never saw anything past the Baby Vegeta stuff). This one was my introduction to anime back when I was a kid. I mean, I watched pokemon, digimon, stuff like that when I was younger, but Dragon Ball was my gateway into 'real' stuff lol. It was my #1 right up until I discovered Berserk about 10-12 years ago.

3. Tokyo Goul/Inuyasha tied. Tokyo Ghoul I've heard goes way off the manga and that the manga is really good, but I've never read it. What I was told exactly is that a specific person didn't join a specific group, because in the manga they would NEVER do that. And them being a part of the group is like an entire season of the show... I don't think that makes the anime itself BAD, but it means the people making it are doing a bad job of telling you the real story. As for Inuyasha, I remember being young and it premiering on adult-swim for the first time and I was OBSESSED... It honestly, probably replaced DB as #1 for awhile when I was kid lol. It does have a really good story imo.

And even though you only asked for top 3 (and I technically gave 4) I've only got 1 more on my list of 'all time favorites' so I'll just spill the beans.... Cowboy Bebop. Another one I discovered early on. It replaced Outlaw Star in my list of all time favorites. I honestly don't get in the mood for space anime like Outlaw Star/Bebop very often, but when I do, I go into hardcore fanboy mode. If you like this kinda stuff, Coyote Ragtime Show and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure are 2 more pretty damn good space-anime.


I highly prefer dubs... I know the subs are closer to the real thing, and thus better.... But if I wanted to read, you know what I'd do? I'd read the Manga and get the real thing first hand and not have to worry about how much closer it is.
