I know the answer to one of your questions:

Q:How much does the new server cost?
    A: A lot.

TJ, stop acting like you've got a pole up your ass. You're better than that.

Sythe said he would be moving his server a bit back - let's hope he was telling the truth when he said it would help the downtime.

Sorry, quite annoyed at this point of time.

Also, did he make a post on it? If so, link? ^.^

    I don't have a link.

I do remember him saying that his host was blocking IPs randomly, though, so I took that as a hint towards him wanting a new host.

OK a quick update for the masses:

Server was down/up graded. Hosting costs are half what they were, but server is faster with more memory. Went from two servers (which was not working out) to one, newer, faster server, which appears to be working well.

I'm looking into remote admin arrangement. I might end up hiring a company to monitor and keep the site online.

My current intention for the direction of the site is greater functionality and userbase.

There is a redesign in the works, I've set aside some capital for it.
There is the notion of a sythe.org MMORPG or private server, lingering in my mind.
And other goodies yet to be disclosed.

First things first. Achieve excellent uptime and activity on the boards. All other things (enhancements, improvements, direction) come second.

Good to hear about the new server, it does seem pretty fast.
What do you mean by 'redesign' on the work? As in new skin?
    Ooo, private server..nice nice.
What is remote admin arrangement? Is that what the company is?

Yeah looks like my provider has changed datacenters so we are no longer under liquidweb. But the worst may still be to come. When the DNS finishes updating across the world, the botnets will probably begin hitting the new server. So we'll have to wait and see how that pans out.

New skin, maybe new version of vbul. Additional features... more website to browse. I'll probably hire someone to do most of this.

A remote admin agreement is where some company monitors and administrates the server and website to keep it online even when I'm off doing other things. It is pretty expensive, but keeping the site online probably offsets the cost with a considerable bonus. The trick is finding the right remote admin company.

So do you think that if we have the server online at all times, then you will be making more money?

Also, im just curious on how much it costs (the new server) instead of alot :(

    edit/

also, every time i go to refresh the page, it goes to "sythe.org is being moved to a new server. Be back soon. is this normal?

I told you, in relative terms. Half as much as the previous arrangement. So I am making profit again.

The DNS updates are still propagating. This can take up to 48 hours. When you see that message your computer is talking to the old server. When you see the live forum it is talking to the new server. Eventually it won't talk to the old server at all.

To speed this up you can go start -> run. Type cmd.exe, press enter. At the prompt type "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotes and hit enter. Then close your browser and open it again.

I've always liked the current forum skin. No complaints about changing but an option to stick to the current one would be nice.

;and the server is about three times as fast. It was about the speed of dial-up with my 100MB/s connection, and now it's up-to-par with most other websites.

A new skin would be nice, and I am very glad that you are making cash again. The new server is great, no more reading emails while waiting for sythe to load. :)

Hopfile could build a customized php program designed specifically for your server to monitor on a live basis and send scheduled/non-scheduled updates via SMS or text-to-speech to your phone in order to report vital data such as memory and cpu usage as well as mysql/lighttpd server performance in order to foil potential server downtime or lag before it occurs. In addition we could customize your php + mysql settings to optimize performance for VBulletin itself which could include providing 4 times more memory to your dedicated mysql daemon as well as removing the bottlenecks for php's mysql functions.

Your server would pack a massive punch with 4GB of dedicated RAM in addition to 4500GB bandwidth and 135GB data storage. If you're interested send a pm to me over this site and I can give you my msn/email/business line and we can discuss things further.

*Hopfile Hosting Inc is a subsidiary of Vibesoft Designs Inc and Spry Hosting LLC.

Those of you who will complain, no I'm not trying to advertise to everyone but to be honest I know this won't be read if I pm him.

In taking this as a serious offer of business, I'd have to point out that this precisely is NOT what I am looking for. I don't want to micromanage the server myself. God knows I have too little free time as it is. I want someone else to manage, monitor, and fix the server without interrupting me.

Further, when the site is attacked in a hardcore fashion, php scripts are the first to be shoved to low priority. It is a poor solution which would serve no purpose to anyone seriously requiring 24/7 monitoring.

This has already been done by my current host.

While probably not a blade server, it meets these specifications already.

I understand your conundrum. I know you're a very knowledgeable person as far as this subject goes so I assumed you might want some insight on the details of your server, although it's your choice ultimately. Regardless of whether or not you want data forwarded directly to you we could manage, monitor, install, tune and fix your server completely without interrupting you beyond request of monthly payment/your personal customer support queries.

First of all we wouldn't use PHP exclusively as a server monitoring system, our systems are equipped with OpManager server monitoring software and are monitored 24/7 by linux certified operators.

In addition the server we use to run our monitoring tools runs locally and isn't connected to the internet. We would run a monitoring program on this server for security purpose and preferably program it in php and/or java simply because these are my best programming languages.

Your server isn't limited to just 4GB of RAM and 135GB of diskspace, a single PowerEdge server can hold 64GB of RAM exclusively. We typically offer 4GB as a start simply because it offers the best balance of price and can fit the needs of most hightraffic sites although we can provide you with more RAM for a onetime fee or a monthly fee. In addition, we'll actually be running two "servers" under your name; the main server with all of the features above and a lesser server which would be used as a failsafe to prevent unnecessary downtime in the event that our technicians need to perform emergency maintenance.
