Richard's C Programming Course (follow along)

Hello!

Some members have expressed interest in learning C so this is going to be attempt one at a course on C and some UNIX system fundamentals too.

The first thing you need to do if you want to join this course is get a copy of K&R C Programming. This is the quintessential guide to C. Grab it here: compiladores/The C Programming Language - 2nd Edition - Ritchie Kernighan.pdf at master · germanoa/compiladores · GitHub

Next you need to setup an environment that you can write C programs in:

1. Grab Virtual Box: Downloads – Oracle VM VirtualBox
2. Grab Ubuntu: Download Ubuntu Desktop | Download | Ubuntu
3. Follow these instructions to install: How to install Ubuntu on VirtualBox?

I'll post each of the tutorials below. We'll conduct lectures and tutorials throughout each week on the discord under the #programming channel. https://discord.gg/aTDJSkG

What can you expect to learn from this course?

1. How to write basic C programs and possibly some advanced C programs
2. Bash and basic linux use
   
3. Some computational theory
4. Basic data types and algorithms
5. Threading
   
6. Processes
7. Networking

What's the time limit for the course?

• Yet to be decided but I imagine everyone will go at their own pace. I will probably publish an assignment every two weeks.

What's it cost?

• First time around it will be free and you can optionally donate extra cash to Sythe if you found it valuable.

Make an effort at reading chapter 1 of the text. I don't expect you to get through it all.

Assignment coming out tomorrow

Grab both files into a directory. Run ./a.out and it will load the map. Use wasd to move around (you have to press enter each time)

Your job is to write code that will mimic this program.

The binary is for an x64 processor. If you have a different processor and you need a binary let me know and I'll cross compile for your system.

I'll resume this course if some students complete the assignment
