Blackhat rule update

To those complaining profusely, let me tell you a story.


There was a new member on the website around 2011, I was checking out what he was doing around the web via his skype. I found his hackforums account via a skype match. There was nothing of notable blackhat value on there except him spamming threads with "worked thanks" to acheive 25 postcount on hackforums website. One of these threads had to do with a booter. Because it was obvious he was spamming for post count I didnt report him.

2 days later he is banned from a yousuckv2 report. I messaged the person who applied the ban (roary) and showed him the proof that the user was clearly just spamming for pc and not actually interested in blackhat. Roary kept the user banned because of sythe.org rules at the time regarding blackhat.

This is another tool that is useful for the staff team. It helps us make sure stories like above dont happen again and it helps us grow our userbase. We cannot afford to be banning users for the simplest little things, and I trust the judgement of the moderation team to make decisions in cases like these.

 

You're trying to "grow a userbase" in a poor way.

 

You're an idiot if you read Tyler's post and came back with this. This site has been insanely strict on this kind of stuff for years, it's time to lighten up. Will it help gain some users? Probably, but it's not like staff are going to be clueless with who they keep around.

Personally do not like us loosening this rule (and voiced this opinion strongly in SL), but my hope is that the language of the new rule:

is still vague enough that we can still ban for it. That said, I definitely think this introduces more grey areas that weren't there before.

 

There are going to be a lot of grey area reports that are going to set precedent for future cases. I'd suggest such cases be reviewed by staff Sythe is willing to trust with molding the Sythe justice system before making a decision that will be referenced in the future for similar cases.

 

Yes, this will inevitably increase the user base, but it does so in a negative way by letting back/introducing users whom have the increased potential to negatively affect our users, which obstructs your current goal.

@Sythe Your desperation for new users continues to end in disappointment. DNT is all I have to say.

 

To clarify, our judgement on many blackhat cases will still be the same. What this basically means is that we don't autoban for minor offsite blackhat anymore while we previously did. There are no strict guidelines, there have never been strict guidelines. Nothing changed there. We will look at everything case-by-case and do what we think is appropriate.

I understand what the goal is but I'd like to see more defined rules as to what qualifies, as has been mentioned in this thread numerous times. I like the change nonetheless and I feel like some are overreacting.

I strongly disagree with this due to the following;

If a "BlackHat" so to speak were into DDoS'ing, RAT'ing, Hacking and all the other things, HOW exactly would a mod distinguish if they were a risk to Sythe members or not?

Here's a few examples;

A script kiddie who's into blackhat joins safe to sell his ill-gotten gains, how do we know they are stolen ? We don't.

Skype accounts start getting hacked. how do we know who has done this ? We don't.

Sites, including this own, aswell as peoples IP's from Skype Resolvers start getting DDoS'ed, because someone doesn't like something/someone. how do we know who has done this? We don't.

Sorry guys, but I feel this is opening a portal to a whole bandwagon of shitheads so to speak.

BlackHat is illegal for a reason, yet you welcome them here wanting them to become "Good" users of the community, I highly doubt that's going to happen if they are into this.

I highly advise having a staff meeting, have a few pints of water/energy drinks for brainpower, and rethink this.

 

I understand what the staff is trying to accomplish here, but like others, the ambiguity of the wording leaves me a tad concerned.

As someone that (has been pardoned for) had experience in the blackhat scene and now does pen-testing and network security as part of my daily employment, I think allowing users to conditionally participate in blackhat activities, which are by definition detrimental to those targeted, is counter-productive to everything the community has worked to avoid in the years that I've been around (nearly 8 years holy sh*it). I think there's also the concern that this rule change may encourage the practice of off-site activities that would reflect poorly on this community and its users, and I think the idea that staff should only react to site-specific targeting can be abused and wont be easily enforceable against actual threats to the community.

 

While I don't agree with the rule change as a whole, I don't think any of the points you brought up are the issues with this rule change. Nearly all of them are unaffected by the rule change, as people hacking and selling gold still exist and are active on these forums. Provided they don't talk about it, they won't be caught or banned. It's always been this way, and in the past when evidence has been brought forward, those users suffered bans. That won't change under these rules.
