Project ideas

Let's get a list of project ideas. When you post, please label the project with "beginner", "intermediate", "advanced", or "expert". It'd be best to come up with ideas that need as little explanation as possible. You may suggest a language/technology to work with, but this list should be flexible in that these items can be developed in any language.

I'll be adding new ideas to this list as they are posted. For now, here is the current list:

Beginner

• 8 digit calculator
• Word processor (like Notepad)
• Web browser using integrated web engine
• Cash counter
• World of Warcraft game launcher

• Password strength analyzer
• Random password generator
• Simple string scrambler/descrambler (encryption and decryption)

Intermediate

• Weather bot
• Twitter bot
• 4chan crawler/scraper
• Web browser a more bare-bones renderer
• Chat program using a REST API backend and web front end
• Software based chat program
• Discord bot
• Applied use of known cryptographic algorithm
• Demonstration of different sorting algorithms

Advanced

• Interpreted scripting language using regular expressions
• Formula solver (or text input calculator)
• IRC client and server
• A physics simulator

Expert

• Interpreted scripting language using grammars coupled with a fully intelligent IDE
• A machine learning application to predict Runescape Grand Exchange trends
• A physics engine

In the past I have found that simple cyphertext or hash solving programs are a good way to build skills, especially if you are not yet sure which IT path you want to take. This would therefore be a beginner project.
