so my feeling after reading all of the posts in the past day is that option #1 (your old #2) would be best in this case to address my original suggestion. #2 should happen, but that's a separate thing.

    do others have thoughts?

I personally wouldn't be comfortable applying for a position if my post was going to be public. Even if it's not sensitive info a lot of it would be rather personal. Plus there's the fact that after sensitive info is removed you wouldn't be seeing the full picture anyway.

all other applications are public. there's nothing particularly private about moderator applications - do you disagree?

Sectionals shouldn't be let anywhere near moderator applications. There is already a massive problem with moderator applications when just veteran staff are working on them and you want to let just anyone who hasn't been proven to not be retarded to have a say? There has never been a problem finding competent staff members so I don't see why we suddenly want to change the process. Moderator applications have proved a horrible failure. How about we go back to what we know works?

input ≠ voting rights. i don't think sectionals should be allowed to vote. i feel like people should know who we're considering and should be able to voice their concerns, which is why i made this suggestion in the first place. i suppose if we just implement some form of this we can get sectional feedback that way

The suggest a mod thread that was in the lower lounge accomplished basically all of that minus the knowing who was actually considered, which to me is a pro.

not sure this has been around in my time on staff but would agree that it's a good idea in my opinion. still think people should have a public place to voice concerns though, but if that's the unpopular opinion in this matter then so be it. hoping we can figure something out that works and isn't displeasing to most people though

It was around when we were staff. Not sure when it was removed but I agree with SuF's last post.

Not sure if you mean people as in sectionals or people as in everyone but from past experiences almost all promotions are not controversial. There is generally only a small handful of people (like me) that react negatively so I'm not sure opening the can of worms that is more community input will be beneficial. Gaining back trust and adding additional viewpoints are less risky and I think going to be more valuable.

Last I checked TC/CDT/PR applications were all done privately? I don't see any archives with applications in.

The parts which differ IMO are:

What skills do you have which sets you apart from someone else?

I would assume a lot of people would reference past work experiences etc in this as evidence of things.

Do you have any current or past experience in moderating any forums? If yes, where?

Some people wouldn't want to publicly link their Sythe profiles to other groups/forums. Take my app as an example.

forgot about C/P/T applications, good point. and fair enough about the privacy concerns.

how about if we just dropped a name in a thread somewhere and said "so-and-so is being voted on for mod - thoughts?" or would that just accomplish nothing?

Well with TC the community's input doesn't really matter lol. It matters what the TC leads think the user in question can contribute to the team. Or rather, what they know they can contribute (after completing a few programming questions).

I don't think that would really accomplish to much, because the memebers can only see what they can see. Nothing else.

Edit: then again, I don't feel staff should stop actively promoting members they see fit just because they don't submit an application. Heck, Hahnerd was a hell of a moderator from what I can remember so how Dark's application beat his I have no idea.

I wouldn't be against it and it would give people a way to voice an opinion if they wanted to. Probably wouldn't be particularly useful but it's completely harmless if posts are hidden.

That way people would vote on the name, not the app. We should be voting on applications as well as other things, but mainly application

@TeamTofu We did question in CDT the privacy of applications and making them public, majority (I believe) of members also felt they did not want their specific applications public. If you ask me I'd still make mine public. It really depends on the person who is applying for whatever they are applying for. I don't want to go off-topic considering this is regarding moderator applications, but the constant bringing up the dev teams also seems to be a point to discuss.

In CDT we were thinking of making applications a more public viewing thing where you would just be able to see who is applying and what they can bring forth. Idea was tossed around and issues such as people copying information for their applications, privacy etc was a cause for concern (like you mention). So it would be the same concept for the moderating process.

That's why I keep questioning why the staff want community input. How would staff go about putting applications public and if they can't because of private information... then how do they expect the community to give input into anything. I've been on the ledge with this suggestion purely because I would like community to have input; having it more open etc, but then there's a question of how and is it really going to work. If anything I'm personally leaning more towards keeping it at the stage we're at now, rather than getting input from community/votes etc.

Just going to implore to the staff to use the common sense, because I'm sure you guys have some. Don't make the same mistakes with promoting someone with minimal activity and don't deny people who could be a better choice. If you're worried that their activity is minimal.. think about it in context.. they would probably be a better choice than the most recent promotion/demotion made. I think all that the community wants is that the staff don't make daft decisions in promotions. Use the common sense next time, think about what is best for the community not just because you think the person being promoted will be / will get good enough for their promotion. (I.e. temp promote/ex-mod get free card to come back - esp if not active).

I think for the most part staff already knows how the community feels about most members attempting to get a staff position, so I don't really see the point in this. Reputations are usually very clear on Sythe. I do like @GuyFrank's objection thread idea though.
