I'm replacing on my current build. These are the only new parts that I need currently.

    Any suggestions on new HDD/SDD

get a cheap ssd for booting and an hdd for main storage. you can also use spare space on the ssd to store a few things you want to increase the loading speeds on.

    Get an i7 4790k instead.

Also get a Z97 Chipset motherboard with a PCIe 3 x4 m.2 slot and get a decent cooler for the CPU. its base clock is already great and wont cause a bottleneck for the 1080 but you seem to be interested in clock rates and hardware that go beyond the use of gaming.

^ this might be a bit specific but its what I have used myself in the past. I can vouch for its performance.

Alternatively you could also go for an X99 Chipset.

Asus has a cheap line of powerfull X99 boards that support M.2 PCIe 3 x4 ssd storage.

    Here's an example: ASUS X99-A LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com

The CPU's that work with these boards are significantly more expensive though.

The amd cpu is going to bottleneck the 1080. My friend has the same build and keeps complaining about it. You should really invest in a better cpu with such a powerful gpu.

No, it won't. Educate yourself on bottlenecks. A Pentium G or Celeron, *maybe* something on the level of an i3 would bottleneck. That CPU he posted is the top Vishera CPU. It would not bottleneck.

On another note, the Vishera tech is ancient. It came out around the same time as late Ivy Bridge/Haswell. Much better tech has come out since then. Tack on another $100 and you can get a much better, newer Intel processor. Something to consider.

@Mathewkthxbai just google the 8350 + 1080 and check out all the people that have been having bottleneck issues.

I think i am not that knowledgeable with Intel to tell you which CPU to get as i have an AMD build myself. Will be getting the 1080 and waiting for zen for the moment. Perhaps @Blupig can recommend you a good CPU.

The issue is that the Vishera architecture is old. It's like if you're in the market to buy a good sports car and you've got enough money for a 2017 Porsche but for whatever reason you're leaning toward the 2011 Mustang.

I was planning to upgrade to the same processor & gpu you want. From what i read on forums from people who have this same setup it seems to hold the GPU back on CPU intensive games.
But if you really want to get it then do it. It shouldn't make that much of a difference and it's affordable. But like blupig said Vishera is kinda old.

I agree that Vishera is kinda old, but it's a cheap, affordable gaming budget. I'm not looking to crossfire GPU.

I guess I will go ahead with this build when the time comes.

Crossfire is for AMD cards that support it.
SLI (Standard Link Interface) is for Nvidia cards that support it.

I'd recommend going for an AMD graphics card (because the RX 480 is better price performance then the GTX 1080)
and an Intel based CPU. Such as an i5 6600k.

Crossfire and SLI are NOT good options if your trying to build a value for performance build. The only scenarios where SLI and Crossfire are useful is if you want to set up like 5 monitors on your system.

More about why SLI isnt all that good for gaming here:

Most games dont support SLI or crossfire.

    More about m.2 SSD's here:

I suggest you inform yourself a bit more and then come to a conclusion on your own.

also. a Z170 chipset board wont work with an i7 4790k. those are different sockets.
