Help me find some new monitors!

You're actually gravely misinformed, the difference between 60hz and 144hz is day and night, especially for fast paced games. Once you adjust to 144, going back to 60 is such a huge difference, you can spot it simply in the movement of your mouse.

144hz is far smoother than 60hz and is well worth the cost.


Also @gracious - please stop referring to it as ghz, it's hz.

 

That's what I thought as well. It's the reason why I bought this monitor I have now, I still can't run 144hz and I honestly have no clue why, is it my GPU, am I missing some type of cable or is it just software (I installed the drivers). Screen is still running at 60hz.

 

If trying to use 120/144hz - avoid hdmi like the plague. Stick to dual link dvi or displayport.

There are converters, yes. Will it allow you to run 144hz? No.

What video card do you have? Exact model/make (for example, EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-3978-KR) - telling me simply "I have a gtx 970" tells me nothing due to the various models and available ports on each.

This will allow me to see what you're working with.

Okay.... Use the hdmi on your old monitor (it's a 60hz monitor right?) and use your dual link dvi for the new one. That will allow you to run 1920x1080@144hz - not sure if you can do 1440 @ 144, and honestly as old as your card is, 1440@144hz will be pointless for gaming. In order to properly utilize 144hz, you need to be able to get 144+ fps in the game/resolution you're running, which I believe that card would struggle to do.

 

So I should probably get an upgrade.

I sent all my computer specs, screen specs to the store where I purchased my computer, I got an answer saying "You don't have the drivers correctly installed" which I do.

Which GPU do you recommend me getting? It was a custom build PC by the store so I'd have to let them do it.

 

You don't have to let them do anything. Changing a video card is very easy. What's your price limit? I'm personally an Nvidia fan, so I'd recommend getting a GTX 970 as those are the best bang for your buck (in the gtx 900 series family)

 

It's just that I'm very scared about fucking something up. My laptop has an NVidia 770M and it's been performing nicely for the past 3 years or so. I'd rather let the store do everything on the motherboard + install it + install drivers etc (pretty much I'd rather pay 40€ and let someone that knows what he's doing to it than me messing something up and having to purchase a new computer.)

Price limit, probably 300€ or so.

 

Replacing a video card is very easy, there's tons of video tutorials online for it.
Seriously, an infant can do it providing they had enough hand/eye coordination. The biggest hurdle you MIGHT face, is ensuring your PSU can

A) Support the card
B) Has the correct plugs (there's adapters you can buy if not)

With that being said, what PSU do you have?

As for a GTX 970 4gb, you can pick one up (providing the prices I just found were correct, hard to find EU pricing in the US) for ~€310-320. Just slightly over your proposed budget.

As for drivers, I can give you a step-by-step on removing/installing those if/when you get the card.

 

I agree with n4n0. Grab yourself a 970, and spend the extra 30 euros you would have paid someone else to install the card to get a 970 that has a higher factory OC, or better cooling system.

There's literally two places (depending on your motherboard) where your card can go. Installation is as easy as unplugging your current one and plugging the new card in. Once you get the Geforce experience installed on your PC from Nvidia's website, the program takes care of all of the drivers from there.

I am sure there are parts to the process that I am missing, I haven't ever upgraded a GPU in a PC. I have only built one from scratch so I don't know the exact method between switching from one GPU from another, but I would imagine it there isn't much that goes into doing it.

 

As far as headphones, I know they're widely underestimated, but I love my turtle beaches, I think it's probably the best set of headphones I've owned, it has a nice bass boost wheel for when I'm watching movies, or listening to music, and the quality is very nice for $45. :3

As far as monitors, I think that's all personal preference...sorry.

 

More like overhyped. Turtle beaches are some of the shittiest headphones out there. Avoid at all costs.
