I've actually had to deal with this type of situation.

Few years ago I traded a white partyhat to one of my good friends on Runescape which he was supposed to give back but didn't and sold it for $$.

We talked and eventually we agreed to be friends again but he wouldn't be giving me anything back, a few months later he traded me over 4-5b (bit more than a white at the time) worth of RS3 GP to see if he could trust me and even though it would've been fair of me to take it (or the amount a white would be worth) I didn't and just gave everything back.

I wouldn't, but only because i can't be bothered to get the money to the people that were scammed.

 

Honestly I see nothing wrong with it at all, I would be cautious doing it because I have seen people on sythe get screwed by doing this before. Although if I ever were to take money that has been scammed it would obviously be returned to the original owner.

I like the fact that you can take money from a scammer and pay back victims on sythe. My question is if a scammer takes 100m and then trusts you with 200m after you have paid back is it acceptable to take the remaining money? I would say so, or then where is the punishment, there is nothing to lose for these people the only thing would be to break even or gain some money. Although I'm not sure on the rules regarding taking more money than has been scammed.

Edit: What I'm basically saying is there needs to be a punishment, if you choose not to take money from a scammer you are teaching them that the action they are taking is acceptable. Would a scammer continue scamming if in any trade they did they run the risk of having their money taken. Taking money from scammers, in my view prevents more scams from happening

 

Punishment is being banned. If you take more than what was scammed, then you're a scammer too.

You do not understand my point, what I am saying is a scammer can take as much as he wants until hes caught and then when hes caught the maximum that he will lose is up to the amount he scammed. There is very little downside for these people. They scam get caught and made a new account knowing that they are free to trade and they will not be risking more money than they scammed.

Your point about being banned is punishment enough, we both know that is not true because there are plenty of people out there that scam make a new sythe scam make a new sythe they dont give a fuck about being banned.

Thats my point, the scammer only risks what isnt his, if a rule was in place where you could take 200m from a scammer that stole 100, but only if you then donated the remaining 100 (sell it to a gold seller then donate the profit to a charity). I'm not saying take it for personal gain, I just dont see the logic in allowing them to take with almost no risk.

I think you can donate the extra 100 if you can't get in contact with the scammer to repay it.

The point isn't to scam the scammer to "make him feel the pain" it's to get the money back to who was scammed and that's that. The punishment is being banned from this site and it's market, which in turn typically bans you from quite a few of the popular online markets because afaik if you scam on one you can get banned on the others (At least it's the other way around here, if you scam on powerbot or some shit, you're donezo on sythe).

If you take the extra 100 from the scammer, even if you "donate it" what makes you any better than he was? What if he was just taking the money to donate it to a charity? To feed his family etc? Better to just not put ourselves on their level and just have clear-cut rules imo.

 

I do not think we will come to agree I highly doubt most people that scam here are doing it to donate or feed their family if they are get a job its not hard. Yes if I took $100 from them I would be better than them, not to say I would be much better but at least still somewhat

Depends how you look at it in terms of being "better than them". Your intentions were better, but your actions weren't. It's a big grey area with a large ethical debate, that's why I feel like it's just left how it is and probably won't change.
