Major Name Change Requirements

Those eligible for a major name change request are those who:•Have donated a minimum of $200
•Have a join date which dates to at least two years prior to their name change request.
•Have 2FA enabled at the time of their request and pass an IP check (To enable 2FA visit http://www.sythe.org/twofactor.php and for a guide see: here.)
•Have not previously changed their name via the name change system
•Must pass a staff lounge poll
•Will be given a User Title linking back to their old name for anywhere between 6-12 months.


My 3 points of contention:

I'm not sure why, but if someone like me(I wont but if I wanted to), wants to change my name from bus369 to bus, I'm not sure what me being around sythe for 2 years has to do with that.

I understand it takes admin time to do changes, but I think the 2 year requirement is a little steep, After the first rush of name changes this would basically become a very under-used feature, I personally think if someone donates $200+ whether their new or old, they should have the right to change their name.


Point 2:•Have not previously changed their name via the name change system


If I shorten my name from bus369 to bus, is this essentially saying I cant even completely change my name again? This is so vague, please elaborate.


Point 3:•Must pass a staff lounge poll


Can we please get some insight into why your requiring a STAFF LOUNGE poll for name changes? Like admins already have to do it, so you would think an admin's approval would be enough? This seems like a utter waste of staff's time to vote on EVERY SINGLE NAME CHANGE.


I know there isn't any suggestions here short of making the 2 year timer shorter, but Tbh there was like 0 elaboration on the requirements and why they were like that.


I'm sure this was discussed with staff so can we please get some of the reasoning behind it, I'm lacking the reasoning behind these 3 specifically, I mean I know its suppose to be exclusive and all but I cant imagine staff actually thought there would be so many name change requests that it would require these type of requirements.

3. How many MAJOR name changes do you think there'll be? I doubt there'll be more than one a week after the main rush.

 

I personally think the 2 year requirement is fine but see no reason why someone has to donate 200$ to change their name, unless it's added in as a donor perk.

 

I agree with this, I feel like donating is too much of a requirement on the site.

 

The name change system isn't a right, It's a privilege. These requirements were set to limit the amount of people eligible for a major name change.

This looks like an error or oversight. It's probably referencing major name changes specifically.

If minor name changes require staff approval, then expect the same for major name changes. The process is pretty simple and is by no means a waste of time.

 

Considering the requirements, I don't think it'll be a whole lot of requests. Wouldn't take too long to vote, so it should be fine.

As for point 2, I agree.

 

Please remember that in any year prior to 2015, any sort of Name Change system suggestion would be locked immediately. Traditionally, most people are against these name changes as it can cause quite a lot of confusion. This is certainly a step in the right direction.

Also, this is a very new system and in order to ensure that it works smoothly, we need to have strict guidelines. These rules may change in the future and allow for more individuals to have name changes, however until then, it's best that it's kept on a somewhat smaller scale.

Essentially, this is to stop individuals from constantly changing their name. While we may be able to handle the confusion of one name change (Considering we can utilise the UserTitle as a way to advertise a past name), having more than one past username makes it very difficult for the staff and market traders to follow who exactly you are.

A majority rules vote is generally always better than a dictatorial system. While in most cases, (At least, the times I've been a moderator) the staff have been able to make completely unbiased decisions regarding most cases, there's always the risk of history getting in the way. It's also better to allow a staff vote as it allows for a much broader range of opinions and issues related to name changes.

Two examples I can think that a vote is more helpful than administrator approval:

• RegularJoe123 asks BigAdmin for a name change. BigAdmin has, however in the past had issues with RegularJoe123. BigAdmin decides that they do not deserve the privilege of a name change. The voting system removes most personal bias, as each member has 1 vote each.
• ImmatureLad69 wants to change his name to "DoucheLord." BigAdmin doesn't know what a Douche is, and decides to allow it. Had the poll gone to a Staff Lounge vote, it's more likely this issue is caught up.

 

$200 is simply too much for me for what I use this website for, and I think that they should respect that. I would go up to $100 probably for a name change because I like the site, but I'd like to change my name at some point but don't see myself spending $175 in the near future to do so.

@Administration: by saying $200 you are saying that you are only looking for one clientele specifically, and that is of the trading type. If you're looking for ways to get this forum more active, you should be targeting more areas than just the shops, the shops are fine, but content is not, there should be more as an active forum.

This is just my two cents of course, but in major forums where not everyone is trading, people continue to donate just because they like the content of the site and may trade sometimes. $200 is a very select bunch and a lot of the $200 donators have probably already removed numbers from their name in the past.

I've been a member (inactive for parts) for 5 years in February and because I can't come up with $200 I can't change my name without creating a new account and never interacting, which is great /s.

 

Going to move this thread to feedback, as it has nothing to do with suggestions.

The requirements are high, but this is a privilege that has to be earned.
We have said in the past that these requirements may be reevaluated in the future, and I'm sure they will be reevaluated if the need is there.

 

this is accurate on points #1 and #3, and brendan's post is accurate as well. also, re: point #3, the votes literally take one second, and they're not inconvenient at all. you look at name change polls for one minute a month, on average, and i think that's worth it.

my personal thoughts - i voted for requiring the lowest possible donation amount that others would agree to (can you tell how that panned out? ). but really, if a name change isn't worth $200 to you, it's probably not worth $200 to your business so you shouldn't do it anyway. also note that these are first-round requirements; we might loosen them in the future if the first batch of name changes go well. so don't lose hope. generally though, the point of these name changes is that there shouldn't be that many, so the requirements are prohibitive for that reason.

 

The 200$ requirement is a bit absurd. I know they want to severely limit who can name change, but 200$ donors make up a very small percentage of users.

 

so sythe is pure business confirmed? what of the other sections? are they supposed to only be used by traders? because a name change isn't worth $200 for me but I don't want to reset my entire account in case I do ever need to trade, i cannot without spending $170 extra

 

You don't have to be making money from Sythe to donate to it. Your free to donate via any income that you may earn, whether it be through Sythe, other internet trading/investments or your physical job.

 

The donation requirement is also something I disagree with. I'll never want a name change as I'm perfectly fine with my current one, but I feel as if those that get one should be deserving - contributing to the community, whether through trades or through activity, and donation amount isn't an indication of that.

 

I feel that name changes should be a donor perk. People will donate decent chunks of money to the site, and after 200$ donor they see very little additional benefits. I feel adding a name change to the 200$ donor perk list adds incentive to donate and rewards those who donate with an additional awesome perk.

 

I live in a 100th world country I don't have $200 to donate to change my name..

 

You also don't have custom donor images nor a username image. Along with those perks, I see the name change as a donor perk. For donating and supporting the site, you're granted certain perks, among these perks, imo, is a name change.

 

Name changes used to be something that the general userbase could only dream about.

The 2 year requirement is because if a user comes on Sythe and after 1 year decides "aye I'm trusted enough to scam now" but requests a name change right before their scam, it could make it hard on their victim to report the scam. Not everyone on Sythe is a market genius, at least this way we'd feel comfortable and hope that a Sythe user of two years isn't just going to scam.

$200 donor is to minimize the # of name changes, again sort of for the reason above.

Stop whining, this is literally something that was almost unimaginable a year and a half ago. Maybe in the future once we perfect the system we'll bring about lower requirements but for now they're staying.
