    If you did this.

If you left a job making $38,000 a year to pursue what you've always wanted to do at age 18.

Are you a fool or or are u a genius?

I'm just curious, if you could sit down one day and leave a job like that with full benefits.

No details yet, just would like to see opinions.

Ask yourself this.... when you get on your death bed... one day.... will you enjoy dying knowing you never got to do what you wanted to do? When death is creeping closer to you, did the 38k and benefits mattered at a job you were not as passionate about?

Whatever your answer is will answer your question.

It depends. Is what you want to pursue going to make you more than just 38,000 a year? Because 33k is the median salary for 18-23 year olds with full or part time jobs. So it isn't too great to stay with whoever is paying you just 38k a year.

$38,000 a year is below living standards, what the fuck kind of example is this? If I'm not making $60k+ after I graduate then something went seriously fucking wrong.

And you fucking people need to learn to stop studying stupid bullshit and do something you actually like. A history major who actually likes history will become a curator and make decent money if they're good at it. An English major can become a lawyer, doctor (with premed), etc.

38K$ per year really isn't much to live on. I'd say that's great if you're also a full time student working towards a degree that will eventually allow you to make much more than that.

You're 18, yes it'd totally be worth it to chase that dream if you already haven't. You can find so many jobs that pay 38K$ per year.

Agreed. While you're young, you're given the opportunity to do what you want: utilize it. Don't have the regret of not doing what you want.

When you're older and have to consider your partner/kids/mortgage/retirement you won't have the chance to do it.

Go for it while you have the chance. You can easily continue your previous sector of work and advance there if you choose to go back to it in the future, then settle down once you've had your fun.

    Genius.

Well for some people it's probably a stupid idea however in my view it isn't. I would rather do something I wanted to do for a very long time than sitting in the office for 12 hours but you get paid big is better.

At least assuming that dream only pays me a little, doesn't really bother me much as long as I'm having fun but of course in a good way. ^_^

I wouldnt say you're a genius just because you give up on something you already got, go with something you truly enjoy and actually want to do. A lot of people including myself work with jobs that I have no desire for at all.

It depends if the risk is worth it. At the moment the $38,000 sounds like a lot, because for you it is. No rent, no tuition, no bills, not worrying about retirement, buying a car, starting a family, college tuition fund, vacation savings.... it goes on and on.

If you think this risk will help you out later in life, and the reward is significant enough, go for it. I don't remember much about your job at Kodak but I'm assuming that's what you're talking about. If you need someone to talk to you're always welcome to add me on Skype. Sometimes talking to someone you don't know and doesn't know you helps you to figure things out a bit more.

Like toast said evaluate your risks, is the new opportunity a job that could support you 5-10 years down the road or is it something that would help you get to the job you want to be in down the road.

I previously left an enrepreneurial venture to build on my skills in a different role and raise my grades in school. I had the opportunity to make unlimited income but in reality over the 2 years I stopped and year I tried it out part time I probably lost out on $50-60k of additional income but I realized the longer I do that job the harder it will be to get out. Let me know if you want some advice in private but I evaluated my risks and in my situation I'm a bit happier making less but also planning to leave where I am shortly for a new opportunity that's in discussion and will put me one step closer to where I want to be for now.

Money isn't everything in life, its a good motivator but don't let it control your decisions. If you truly believe your new opportunity will provide you with growth as a person and improve your skills I say you go for it.

    If you did this.

I think it depends entirely on what you want to do in the long run, there's likely no reason why you can't carry on a job and concentrate on other ventures as well, although you would have to consider how much of your other life activities you'd have to sacrifice for it. But then again, dedicating all of your time completely might allow yourself to concentrate on the venture wholly.

For me personally I would keep at the job I had, as I have no skills or qualifications, just experience.

We can't make that decision without any information - you have to weight the risks and benefits of leaving your current job and going with what you want to do. On one hand, $38 grand isn't very much long-term and if by leaving the job you are opening up a new opportunity for yourself, by all means go for it. However, if there's a real chance that new venture you're pursuing will just crash and burn and suck up money, sticking with the job is much more reasonable. Think about what's right for you.

    If you did this.

    It all depends....

Is what you've always wanted to do is sit on the ground and play in mud? Because in the world today, you can't live off that... There's better things out there than 38/year.... I'm not sure where you live, but my mother makes 36k/year we're right on the edge of living in poverty... And poverty and middle class isn't separated by only 2 grand... Granted, you'd only be living for yourself (as far as I know, maybe you have a wife and 10 kids, but for the sake of the rest of this message, let's say you're solo) so 38k/year would probably be amazing for just you than compared to raising 2 kids alone on it... I don't really know that perspective of it.

But, money also doesn't matter... if you can get by, even if it's JUST BARELY by doing what you want... Then do what you want, be happy, live life the way you want to... But, if it'd be impossible to pay bills and etc by doing what you want... I'd suggest against it, but in the end, no ones opinion matters. The only thing that matters is how you see it, how you look at it...

For all I know, maybe 38k/year makes you even happier than doing whatever it is you want... Maybe your the type of person who is made happier by money than by petty dreams... I'm not saying that'd make you bad, or a dreamer bad either... But the answer to your question all depends on the type of person you are....

Depends on the dream and how realistic it is, 38k a year at 18 is a lot though, should of milked it as long as possible!
