I want to set up a server for ArK: Survival Evolved server. I'm trying to brainstorm the best options.

This is what the developer says:

So I think he is saying you only need 4Gb RAM 20GB HDD and a quicker CPU to run a server. I only need mine to hold 50-70 players max.

I'm thinking a second hand computer from Craigslist/thrift store might actually handle this?

(I have fiber optics 1gbs up and down)

What do you guys think is the cheapest/best option?

I think you should rent a proper server, I offer dedicated servers with DDoS protection for affordable prices. They aren't all listed on my site as of yet though. Please add my skype for further discussion live:jon.sythe

If you decide to rent, check out hosthavoc.com - I've been using them for 4 months now for an Ark server, and they have he best support I've ever experienced from a host, and great pricing.

I'd also rent. Services like that already have everything you need set up for you, and added security. You're looking at a lot of overhead to prevent hacking and other misc attacks on your server if you do it yourself.

HostWinds has servers most suitable to your specifications if you plan on growing a bit more, otherwise a mid-grade machine would run suitably.

I think if you're setting up a server that you want to stand out from the majority and run smoothly, upfront/monthly costs are going to be higher than your average "game server". The problem with renting a particular gameserver is you're generally crammed into an already over populated server and you'll see the affects in-game. However, when you start doing things properly you hire a dedicated server. Be it a rack server or a cloud server you're at least in control of what the server is doing. However, this comes at a pricey cost. I pay approx £75 pcm just for my cloud server to host a few php scripts and sql databases. However, it runs flawlessly and is incredibly fast. I'd personally suggest with your network at home to purchase the parts to host a dedicated server from your home. The up front cost will be higher, yet you'll have complete control. There are also measures you can take to prevent ddoss attacks, though I'm not an expert on them.

I have very little ddoss protection and have never had a problem so far.

I don't mind if I make a sale with you or not... I mind if you buy something that isn't going to be good.

As far as DDoS protection in the home, the problem is that you would need the network bandwidth available to mitigate an attack. There really aren't ways to do this from home, properly.
