Looking to buy a new laptop.. suggestions?

Alright.. I've been out of the game for a while now (several years).
My current laptop is about as useful as a boat anchor as it is at playing video games. It's one of those, $289.99 walmart specials and is sitting at almost 4 years old.
Needless to say, I'm in the market for a new one. I don't need anything ridiculous.. just something to power runescape on its lower settings and wont lag like all shit.
I've got a price limit of about $500.
Heard good things about the HP 15T.

Any suggestions?

 

I might have some good choices for you. What are you looking to use it for? Just Runescape? 07 or RS3? Any games like CSGO or League? Get back to me and I'll find you a good one.

 

Do any rendering of any sort? GFX, Videos etc? If so get something with a decent processor. Ugh i'm so against laptops as a main device .

 

Nope. Just RS. Mainly just OSRS.I can't say I won't dabble in rs3 some out of pure curiosity for how different is it now.. But mainly any time spend is going to be on OSRS. No counter strike or LoL or anything. Just OSRS.

No, I don't. As far as gaming/ online gaming goes.. I haven't done any of it since like 09. Haha
I know it's frowned upon to use a laptop as main gaming source.. Just don't do enough gaming to justify spending a bunch of money on something good >_<

That's far too expensive for just RS. Here's a really sweet rig for a really sweet deal. I'm not sure how long that deal will last, but I really urge you to get it!

 

Not really wanting to spend quite that much.. but I have been looking at those. They look like a great package.. Maybe I'll splurge and end up getting it. Who knows.

Out of the two I'd do the Acer. It's more expensive yeah, but it's stay relevant for a lot longer. You also wouldn't be limiting yourself with that dedicated GPU. You could do other things someday if you really wanted to instead of bottlenecking your possibilities with that $260 shit lenovo.

 

Hey man, he asked for something that's good for ONLY running RS. What's the point of wasting money to "maybe" play a different game when he's certain he only wants to play RS?

 

Bluepig, I completely hear you out, brother. I just don't have any desire to do anything more with it. I'm not going to be upgrading it or anything. I'm also not going to ever play any other PC games besides RS.. and I'll probably even just dabble in rs sparingly. I'm torn because the Acer does provide so much.. I just don't know if I'll need that much.
Here's basically where I stand:
Spend $500 on Acer. Have a badass laptop. No money to spend on OSRS gp.
Spend $250 on Lenovo. Have modest entry level laptop that runs RS, but that's about the extent of it. Have $250 to spend on OSRS gp and other things.

It's the classic example of opportunity cost. Which is it?

 

Well, deal ended today I guess. Lenovo went up to $350.

Really really would love to stay under $350.. but if I had to pick between these two it's looking like the ACER since the lenovo deal ended.
Any more suggestions?

 

Are you against buying one off eBay? I've purchased my last two laptops off eBay and they've been great.

 

I mean, you're lucky you live in the US, in europe (or attleast Belgium) you're going to have to spend ATTLEAST 700-800&#8364; to have something half decent and running (anything below is legit crap) my laptop was over 2000&#8364; and it's nothing fancy, lol. Bare in mind that's &#8364; not $.

As for other laptops, I'd suggest looking into 'medion' (not sure if they're out in the US though?) They are the cheapest here.

@OP, components wise, the acer one is much better, and as others have said, it'll last you longer. the i3 + 4gb of ram one, sure it might run runescape but forget running 2 runescape at the same time / running runescape + watching youtube videos at the same time.

whichever you decide to get, they both seem to have 5400RPM drive so i would suggest you to later on purchase an SSD to swap the HDD with (250GB should be enough), it is the best upgrade you can do on a PC performance-wise.

a 250GB SSD will run you about 70-90$ USD on sale so it really is a great deal for the added performance it gives you!

also, a non-negligeable option the Acer one has: 1920x1080 screen, gives a much better experience vs 1366x768 screens (you basically have 40% more "space" on the screen)

Let me ask you this : In doing my research I found that many people said because RS is browser based it is better to have a good CPU than GPU to run it. Is that true?
Would this be a good option? If not.. probably just going to go with the Acer I guess.

RS is more CPU intensive than GPU intensive. I bought my girlfriend a dell laptop for christmas for $300 off eBay. If you can buy that laptop you described for only $200 definitely buy it.

 

He's still got it. Going to pick it up Friday as long as it doesn't sell before then though.

 

tbh, i would not fork 200$ for a 5yr old medium level laptop, but that's just me , that i7 is less powerful than today's i5's

guess it's -ok- for 200$ but I wouldn't do it personally!

All you want to do on your laptop is play runescape.... You don't need a top of the line laptop to do so. You don't need an i7 or even an i5, but of course its better to get a better laptop now so you aren't stuck with a crappy one when you want to do something other than play runescape.
