[Tutorial] How to get notifications on Sythe!

Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my thread on how to get notifications from Sythe!​

As almost all of you may know, there's no notification system on Sythe. The only way to receive notice of when someone quotes you, responds to a thread, etc., is by email. Email is oldschool. Nobody uses that anymore. Plus, it's extremely annoying having to go offsite into your email just to check if you've got a notification.


We want something newer, and better. Well I have just the thing you're looking for.




It's simple, and all you need is a cell phone. The reason you need a cell phone is because the notifications will get texted to you. But don't worry -- your phone number won't be publicly shown.




Requirements:
- A cell phone
- Must be on one of the 4 main carriers (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile)




Here's how you do it:


1.)
Navigate your way through your settings to get to the page where you can edit your email & password.
- Alternatively, you can just click here and it will take you to the page you need to be on.



2.)
You now need to change the email that is associated with your account. You'll need to change it to the appropriate (new) email address, which you can find below.


This is where your carrier comes in to play.

AT&T: [email protected]
Sprint: [email protected]
Verizon: [email protected]
T-Mobile: [email protected]


So, for example, lets say you have Verizon and your phone number is 111-222-3333, here's how you'd enter it;







3.)
Now you need to make it so you start receiving notifications. Head in to the edit options section of your account.
- Alternatively, you can just click here and it will take you to the page you need to be on.

Once here, navigation to the 'Messaging & Notification' section. Now, change your default subscription mode to 'Instant email notification'





A bit further down from that, you should look for the little box that says 'Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages', and check mark the box

And voila. That's it. You will now get a text message every time someone quotes you, responds to your threads, PM's you, etc.

I'm sure that other cell phone network carriers have that email option too, but I don't know what they are. If you know, please post below so I can add it. One thing that I think would help a lot is if we could find out how to get it to text your skype account. Your skype account has its own phone number right? Well if we could find the email address needed for skype, we could maybe get that to work -- which would be awesome.

 

Have to say, guide is 10/10 looks amazing.

The only problem is based on the text you received, it's pretty length, and it can be spammed quite a bit leading to a LOT to read. Nonetheless, this is a great guide, glad you wrote this haha. Might use this myself ^-^

Thanks for the feedback I was inspired to make I made a thread yesterday asking if there were notifications and you said no. But yea, you're right. The text is pretty lengthy. However, the post was kinda long because the user quoted me and made his own post so it kind of doubled the length of the text. Nonetheless, you can still just use the text as a signifier that you've received a notification, not to actually see what the notification actually says.

 

Meant for when you're away from the keyboard and on a mobile. Just let's you know that you have a new post on one of your threads for when you get back, so that you don't have to hunt through them

 

With the amount you spam... You would get destroyed.

Very cool feature, great idea. The visual layout of the guide could be streamlined a bit but that's really not a problem. 9/10.

I actually like how specific the messages are. Seems like you get all the info you need if you happen to be away from your computer at the time.

Also this. Not to sound too unoriginal but a lot of sites are adapting a Facebook-style built-in site notification system (ex: Gamespot, The Escapist, etc.) I think getting the dev team to think this one over would be worth a go.

For people who have smartphones that do not have this option with their provider:

Download the gmail app. Have it set to notify you of incoming emails. Use a gmail as your email. Works practically the same, only it pops up as an email instead of a text, perfect for when you're away from home assuming you have 3G/4G

Is there a way to subscribe to specific threads only?

 

Yes there is. On your thread, click "Thread tools" on top right corner -> "subscribe to this thread"
