Can guys and girls be best friends?

Had an interesting discussion with my brother

So basically when I mean just friends, I mean not even at one point falling for one another. Just friends throughout.

I agree with it that it's possible while my brother doesn't.

I gave him examples of a few of my friends who have friends of the opposite sex and they're just friends. My brother would usually argue that how do you know that one of them doesn't have feelings for the other? And unfortunately I can't say I would for a fact.

Coincidentally (I hope) every girl that's been our (close) friend in the past has either fallen for us, we've fallen for them or one of us were in a relationship during the friendship. That's my brothers condition of being best friends with a girl: one of the party is already in a relationship.

What are your thoughts on this?

 

Majority can be friends, but being best friends can definitely// sometime over step the line with gals and guys.

Example.. one I can think of, this guy and I were friends for a long time. We chilled daily, spoke daily about anything and everything. Eventually our friends around us questioned our friendship, and started putting idea's out that we had more then just friendship, or we should be more then just friends. So in the end he assumed he had feelings for me, because they all made him think that was the whole point of the friendship. It got pretty awkward, because obviously he expected me to feel or be the same towards him or about him, although I knew his feelings (at the time) were just because of peer pressure around us. I didn't reciprocate in the peer pressure, and say hey yeah maybe we have something more then just our friendship. I may of had feelings toward him at a point or understood that our friendship was more then just friends (we understood each others humour, compared to others around us), but never expected or needed anything more then being friends or close friends.

So that's my experience of a situation like that.

P.s. no I wasn't uhm, friend-zoning him, in essence I guess.

 

If two people are not physically attracted to each other, it shouldn't be hard to keep it a friendship.

 

Absolutely, a girl used to be my best friend we would hang out everyday, and we were not dating or had any feelings for each other but i still wanted to fuck her but yes.

I have been great friends with a girl for the majority of my school life, around 3rd grade I think, and I'm now in college. We've both been in numerous relationships, hung out with eachother's boyfriend/girlfriend, etc. We're easily able to get along together without any desire for a relationship, sex, or anything of that nature. We've also both been single for a decent amount of time, at the same time.

So I think girls and guys can be on a best friend basis. Not all can, but it is certainly possible.

I'm pretty good friends with a group of girls in college that I wouldn't imagine dating or they're already in a relationship. I don't see why not

 

I do not. There will be at least some hidden attraction on either end.

I used to fight with my fiancé about this and as I grew older I began to agree with her.

 

I have a guy best friend i've known for 5 years hes a bit older than me (I'm 23 hes 40) so hes more of a father figure. Never had one ounce of sexual tention with him. Hes really helped throughout my life, has great advice.

 

That's the thing though. Two close friends will end up being physically attracted to each other is what my brother's point of view is.

How do you guys know for sure those friends didn't have feelings for you at some point?

 

it can happen, happens all the time. it depends on the person, i find if a friend that's a girl of mine is sexy, i just want to sleep with her. but idk

 

I don't think so, I think the attraction or feelings will always be there.

 

It's possible but in most situations people are starting to get feelings for the friend which fucks up the friendship.

I have a female friend who I see quite often and we both don't have feelings for each other we just like the same games, movies, tv series so we just chill, drink and sometimes go out. It's been like this for about 3-4 years and no one of us ever had feeling for each other.
I think this is rare though, as most guys I know who were in a similar situation started to fall in love with the girl or the other way around.

 

Sexual tension always prevails. And if it isn't mutual then eventually you won't be friends anymore.

 

I'd say yes.
There are some people you just don't see in a sexual way or anything. You can keep it friendly and as long as they have the same interest, then I don't see why not.

Of course they can, lol. I would say a lot of my female friends are attractive but I don't want to be in a relationship with them. Unless you have a juvenile mindset and all you want to do is sleep with everything with a pulse then it should be attainable to you, .

My best friend for 20 YEARS is a girl. Never really had a problem. Will say we are in love, but it's of a different sort. It's slightly hard to explain.

 

They can, but only for a certain limit, like it's not really ok to go have a party with one of your friendzoned girlsfriends, everything'll be fucked up if u attempt, especially when u have gf

 

yes. i have a few friends that are girls that i hang out with on a daily basis.
