    Serious Question

My employer just mandatoried us 60 hours a week for the rest or the year.

I'm 21 yrs old I don't have time for that shit I'm not trading my life for my job.

My question is if I drop 1,000 on Sythe is it possible to match my current salary of $30,000?

That way I can work off Sythe and go to school to pursue what I actually enjoy doing.

I'm tired of bustin my ass.

Pretty sure labor laws override their contracts lol. I'd fight it, but your call.

OT: It'd be tough to make 30k$/year on Sythe, unless you know what you're doing.

Forced overtime is legal, but it must be paid at least time-and-a-half. It's legal to mandate overtime, and it's legal to fire noncomplying employees

The only thing that I learned in college actually pertains to this... There are 'exempt' and 'non-exempt' employee agreements. One receives 1.5x overtime, and the other does not get additional pay for 40+ hours/week or 12+hours/consecutive.

Apparently, you should always know this when you get hired so you don't get grossly underpaid while salaried by working 60 hour weeks for no additional pay.

Federal statute mandates that these laws can be altered for higher minimum wage or lower overtime threshhold at a state level, they cannot be overridden for compliance. Employers have irrevocable power to appropriately apply mandatory overtime, and this can only be overridden if proven unconstitutional.

as i said fed laws are mainly guide lines...

There are at least 16 states with restrictions on mandatory overtime: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia. These restrictions range from limiting the number of work-hours an employer can require to prohibiting the practice of mandatory overtime in certain occupations. Some states also prohibit the use of mandatory overtime as a means to overcome staffing problems.

so as i said depends on where op lives and where he works

The states you listed are the states which nurses are exempt from mandatory overtime. That's not to say the labor laws have been superseded, but that the ANA association has invoked a bill of rights, a clause written in to the FLSA subsection of the country's labor laws.

    Source: http://www.nursingworld.org/MainMen.../Legislative-Agenda-Reports/MandatoryOvertime

So yes, while exceptions can be written in, it doesn't mean individual states can override federal law whenever they feel like it. This example you provided isn't the individual states saying "hay, let's spare our nurses". It's ANA saying "we're fighting for less overworked nurses", and so have worked with state legislators to help amend the FLSA.

So unless OP is a nurse (by his salary, not likely), or another profession who's rights have been fought for by a related association, it's assured that his labor adheres to FLSA standards.

Yeah it pays 1.5x over 40 hours but I work as a technician in a glass factory and have to wear full protective equipment in 90 degree heat and the shit is too rough. I think it's only for people who can't find another way in this life and give up to be abused.
