Selling my beef jerky for charity

So my friend got cancer (leukemia) earlier this year and so the college house I'm in decided to make the charity for this year the Leukemia foundation. Unfortunately no one actually did any kind of fundraisers, it was just reliant on people donating spare change. After about 7 months only $200 has been raised which I think is pretty fucking pathetic. So what I did was made a batch of beef jerky (been making it for 3 years now as a hobby) and sold it to other people at school, all the profits I make go to the foundation. Its been about a week since I started and I've got around $60 to donate now, compared to the $200 made in 7 months, and I'm just one person.

It really makes me wonder why other people don't take the initiative to do something like this, I'm not one to usually get involved heavily with these kind of things until now. If these keep selling at the same rate I will have a gross profit of about $350 ready to donate. I'll let everyone know if I achieve this goal.

So my question is, have any of you guys ever done something similar to me, what are you views on charity in general?

It's a good thing if you're being legit about the fundraising, and the money truly goes where it belongs. Charities are good for society...they help accomplish a lot in the world.

Charity is awesome - just gotta make sure that you're donating to the right one(s). Some charities, however good their intentions may be, do not end up using their money most efficiently. I'd feel much better about a donation if I knew that, say, 80cents/dollar I donated would be going straight to the cause instead of being diverted for administration/advertising/etc.

If it's true, go ahead and pm some mods, just try it. Tho, the only wrong thing about charity is that it can be pretty much abused as noone really checks where the money goes. Those guys who abuse this are pretty pathetic, and they'll surely regret lying.

It's a great thing that you are fundraising for charity, I once jumped out a plane and raised £400 achieving that!

    Thats really great.
    Keep going :)

I've baked cakes before, for a charity bake sale. I think this was for a few different charities.

I used to volunteer in Heart Foundation UK in the retail shop. Loved helping out there... they to go to the local football stadiums abd fundraise there.

I read this article that said the majority of the ice-bucket challenge proceeds didn't go to helping those in need.

I'd like to see people donating to people they know or see in their own lives that need help instead of wasting half their donation on the greedy management.

Just about any charity is a scam. They take 90%+ of the money donated and put it towards salaries, advertising, and growing the business. and claim they help people with the $0.10 on every dollar that they give to people in need. If your friend got leukemia then give the money to him.
