Leaving a secure & comfortable job for university

I'm currently stuck in a dilemma of leaving a comfortable & secure job & wanting to get back into education.

So I'm currently a design engineer for a large furniture manufacturer, but I'm not overly happy doing what I'm doing or even have much ambition for what I do. I'm 20 years old & I've been at this company for 2 years & I know I'm unbelievably lucky for getting a job like this.

I've been thinking for the last 6 months of leaving this job with the dream of going to university I'd love to study law or something similar.

I currently feel like I'm stuck in a rut & there's no chance I'm going to get out & I feel like if I don't take this chance now, I'll never get the chance.

    Just want some advice; thanks.

Go to school part time. Take a couple classes each semester so that you can balance both. Not sure if your schedule would allow that, but at least at a community college or junior college.

my opinion is "go for it" - you're still super young, and it definitely becomes harder to get more educated as you get older. live is about doing what you love, and this is the first step along that path for you, i hope! :)

    This.
I was in the same boat. Working long; hard hours, but good pay. I was gaining experience and getting a nice bank balance at the end of every month, but it just wasn't the life for me. So I went to Uni to study for a degree in hopes to get something better out of it (Not including the 35,000 debt) LOL.

If you don't like the job you're doing atm, I'd say go back to school.
Maybe you can balance both out like Dunworry said.

Definitely leave, if you're not happy with it. I believe being happy with your job is much more important with how much you make at your job. A lot of people make $70k+ who are stressed out as fuck, where others make $>35k and have a great life.

    Good luck. :)

Before you quit make sure you're accepted in uni.
Same goes before finding any other job; dont quit your current one until you have a new job.

You can check out if you can fulltime study & perhaps part time work at your current job. That may also work, and you'd have the epic side job.

What would you be pursuing if you decided to go to the university? You said you're interested in law. So if you're planning on going to university to get some bullshit degree like political science I'd be 100 pct sure you're going to fully commit to law before quitting your job for a degree that by itself means nothing

You do not want to live the rest of your life thinking "What If?"
You've only been at your current job 2 years and if you're fed up with it think how you will feel in 20 years?

My advice is to take the chance and pursue what your interest is in, otherwise you will regret it later on.

You have to weigh up your responsibilities for the potential outcome, whether there's any way of doing both.

Law school I'm unfamiliar with. However, I'd assume it would equate to full-time employment or similar.

If you don't have kids, or a mortgage and just your phone bill.. Then I'd say go for it, yeah you might be giving up a decently ( paid ) job, that's not everything. If you're not happy doing it then pursue what you feel you want to do. If you do have responsibilities that you cannot turn your back on then it's still possible, it will just require a severe amount of sacrifice to achieve it.

    Good Luck.

Hey bud, as all have mentioned, don't quit your full-time job until you have acceptance at the university you want to be at. That also means, don't accept an offer to study from a university which mightn't be your 1st, 2nd or 3rd preference. As far as full time law school and part time work, in my opinion, as a 2nd year law student, you won't be able to juggle the workload. I work 8 hours a week and study full time otherwise and it takes its toll on me. Law school is hard af but it's definitely one of the best decisions I've made in my life, and I thoroughly enjoy it! The competitiveness of it all is exhilarating.

I too left a stable job, whereas I was on a solid income, but too was in the same situation as you. Haven't looked back, go for it. If you ever decided that you didn't want to do university any more, you always have past experience in your job sector which won't be looked past by future potential employers. Nothing to lose.

Is there a possibility of doing both? Does your employer offer any tuition assistance? My current employer is funding my MBA, which saves me over $60k over the course of the next 3 years.
