I stick with hidden stocks that have long term dividend growth.

Try avoiding day traded or too much a common name due to security over speculation.

What do you mean hidden stocks that have long term dividend growth?

Most stocks with high dividends are companies that are older and established - so what do you mean by hidden?

    QFT

If anybody watched the futures before the market opened it signaled a pretty ridiculously low open. I bought SVXY at market open for nice profits

Been looking into some things. Gonna invest in something I have a general knowledge of the business and I reckon my reasoning is sound. I have a little but not a ton of money to fuck around with (around 10k) that I hope to make some money on.

Looking into car companies in 2009 has given me insight into how truly bad the economy was back then. Even companies who haven't exploded in production have nearly tripled in price.

No huge difference. JBLU tends to beat LUV's numbers but they're not as "established" (which also means JBLU has more potential room to grow). JBLU has a higher debt/equity, but this doesn't necessarily spell trouble. It's normal as JBLU is a younger company.

I guess it comes down to personal preference on the fundamentals and dependability. JBLU is a perfectly good stock to own now though and totally agree with you owning it and I might even add it into my portfolio.

I also like Boeing and LUV flies boeings over the airbus that JBLU flies

Justin would you say it's possible to learn all the knowledge you've gained so far through self-education?

Right now I'm on track for computer science, but honestly finance really interests me. I really wanna figure this out as soon as possible, but yeah just let me know what you think of teaching yourself vs. learning through a standard college education. Thx bb

I don't know much about the stock world but wouldn't it be a great time to buy stocks and hold onto it for the long run given the bearish outlook of most investors at this time? Wouldn't the economy recover like it usually does? I'm aware there's no recovery in sight for China but still, wouldn't it be a smart thing to do? Thoughts?

We can't look into the future. I can tell you what I did

I bought a good amount now and will most likely close my longs a week or two into september. I think we hit lower lows in late september/early october. That being said, in the long run, I think we will continue to expand and fundamentally sound companies will continue to do better. But you'll make more bang for your buck if you wait until we hit a lower lows in october. If you know what you're doing you can make just as much money if not more money in a bearish market. Stocks always fall much faster and lower than they rise. Short short short

    This is all opinionated

not to speak for him, but in general terms and from my pov, there's nothing being discussed here that's not publicly available knowledge. if you're willing to read and commit time/effort/potentially a bit of money to trying things out, you can definitely learn an awful lot. but SS's position is also somewhat privileged in terms of his line of work (which obviously gives him more exposure to this kind of thing than a normal person would get). additionally, day-trading or even just trading with a $400k portfolio will never be taught in schools; some things you just have to experience for yourself.

fwiw, cs is a pretty good line of work to be in if you're interested in this sort of thing as cs majors are sought after and hired relatively often by financial firms. so yeah, your major isn't going to keep you from anything here

Spot on. I'm going into my third year and only just began my upper division classes. Here in the states those are the ones specific to your major, so I haven't taken too many econ related classes. I've learned more from my peers, trying it myself, talking to people a lot smarter than me, and reading.

Also spot on. If you want to be a portfolio analyst it should never be your first job. It's extremely difficult to become a good portfolio analyst out of college despite how good you are at what you do. It comes down to clients not willing to give fresh college grads their money. They just don't trust you. I'd highly recommend working at a bank or doing something related to finance for a good 5-7 years before making the transition to portfolio and wealth management. And you can do all of this with a computer science major and some good experience
