Clean up General Discussion

General Discussion has gotten worse and worse over the years but at this point I'd say its reached an all time low. Its as though staff ignore it altogether, I've reported several threads that are against rules (stupid "favorite" threads, or "would you rather" post farms) to no avail.

The forum is bombarded by newfags bumping every thread on the first 3 (or more!) pages for post count or shitposting new threads every other day. There are THREE threads on the first page involving the premise of going back in time.. Several stupid ass drug threads. And TONS of "which do you prefer" threads. Its a shitposters haven.

TLDR archive, delete, infract. The section fucking sucks.

 

I agree to a point. General discussion is literally the hotspot for scammers to grab a few easy posts. Most of the threads in there are recycled crap anyways.

 

Shit threads beats no threads

 

General discussion always had threads like that. If you go 200 pages back you will see for yourself. More of the similar threads are just surfacing. If we close those threads, activity in that section dwindles significantly.

Shit like "how to inhale weed most effectively" (that's a real fucking thread..) used to get closed and or moved to SF. And these "which would you prefer" threads are blatantly against rules.

Are you fucking retarded? This thread was made pointing out numerous threads and topics that ARE against rules that are being allowed because some believe as Roary said "shit threads are better than no threads" or whatever. Pretty sure you don't get PC here, go back to GD to spam.

Then we've got "how to smoke weed most efficiently" thread with like 3-4 others involving the premise of time travel. This is only the first two pages. The other threads are filled with spam 2-3 word answers as well.

 

Please refer back to your original post where you talk about "threads including the premise of going back in time" which are not against rules, yet you brought it up in this thread, and it's quite obvious you're referring to my thread.

Actually, either the staff don't like you or what 'cos I'm sure another thread there was moved to media section, clearly they dont see it as against the rules, so... maybe if there's some sort of way to have posts be limited to more then 5 letters, 100 letters then allow it to be posted ..perhaps?

That stuff doesn't belong anywhere, where else should it go, SF? why so people can troll and be a nuisance on it?

And anyways since when does post count even matter, do we base trust on post counts now?

 

I'll toss up another sticky. We had a similar change in SFA recently and that seems to have worked. I closed some of the threads you linked but for example "Should I live on or off campus" can only be answered if you have a reason. Something like favorite restaurant or shoe style is a matter of personal preference and does not belong.

Touching on what Roary said, it isn't enough to remove shitposts/threads, we are going to be relying on the users to create quality threads. Otherwise the section is entirely dead

 

This would be better in the feedback forum and call attention to the OT mods and other mods with perms. That's what I did for the SFA and now it's sorta better. I don't think that all shitty threads should be deleted/archived/locked since it's very subjective as to what is a waste of time, but as you said those time travel and other obviously farmposting threads should be taken care of. 1 word responses do not invite discussion.

Thanks video, maybe I can interest Superfluous in taking a special initiative in the section like he did with SFA. Noticed a few of the threads closed and or moved, I appreciate the effort.

^ This. I'd be a lot more apt to post there had half the posts not been "lolz I liek Taco Bell" or 14 year olds asking what car they should get.

I personally had no issue with those threads (left them up despite a report from you to close one of them noddy) but it's worth trying out tightening up on things again to see if we can raise the standard of discussion considerably.
