Probably just with newer models yeah? My buddy has a '98 BMW that he bought for 3k that runs like a dream and is able to take it to whoever he wants. We're in Toronto btw.

This. BMW's are expensive to maintain and if they aren't you will run into even more problems. Honestly your first car should be something cheap and safe. Trust me its not worth getting a nice car and not being able to do anything else because you are tryign to pay it off.

Still if you want to get a bmw, look for an older 3 series you should be able to find one in that budget.

Typically those 4 cylinder mazda's are pretty great. The 4 cylinder mazda 6s often go to atleast 300k kms I've seen quite a few reach the 500k kms mark which is wildly impressive.

It's only the electrical problems that most mechanics don't bother with since it's a goose chase that can result in some negative reviews. Toronto or big cities with a large population and a larger number of bmw's definitely results in better servicing though in contrast to where I live.

I have a 2005 Mazda Rx8, I must say, if you're not a car person you'll hate the car. I only bought the car because 1) It was my first car. 2) It was perfectly in the price range, and it looked nice. Since I'm not a car person it doesn't really get the care it should. Should be getting a newer car soon anyways.

I'm buying a 93 rx7 soon after I get the funds in order. Rotary engines are a weird beast especially if you don't maintain them properly. I hope you've atleast enjoyed the experience of owning a rotary engine and a piece of Mazda's history!

I wanted the car so bad. It looked so sporty for a crazy cheap price. But like all thing too good to be true I found out it was not worth it. I read reviews and 9.5 out of 10 people said they had major issues with it eventually.

My friend who also has an Rx8 loves his car. I like driving mine, but I'm the kind of person that if one thing brings then I'll just push it off and run the car until it's time to get a new one. Don't get me wrong, the car is fast  but I prefer looks than speed. Rx8's look very nice though, mine was a dark blue but their was some sun damage on the hood/sun roof. Rx7's are also very nice imo, but for other people to drive, not me :p

You can find many Beamers on the market for under $10,000, but if you're on such a tight budget you really want to look for reliability.

Try a Honda Accord/Civic or a Toyota Camry. They are under your budget if you look between 10-13 which means you can still get a newer model with lower mileage.

Always look for something well taken care of, inside and outside. Chances are if you're purchasing a used car if they cosmetically took care of it they also took care of the engine. This is essential because you break in your car the first 10,000 miles off the lot. Not changing the oil at least 3 times in this timespan will fuck the overall life of your car. Also if they beat up, floor it, redbar it.

The other problem with the BMW is that parts will be almost 2x the cost of any other make to replace/repair, and considering you're on a budget you want to think that over.
