Thoughts on Windows 10 surveillance?

Okai it's kinda hard to understand all of that, seeing as really big picture..


But what in the hell is microsoft doing, a friend of mine sent me a link in order to download windows 10, now I'm seriosuly doubting it, 'cos seems extremely odd and uhh. whats the word, they seem to be inviting theirselves into our lives too much, a tad scary.

 

This is why I'm sticking with Windows 7 for the time being...

Although I'll be able to get the Professional / Enterprise edition for my PC (yay), I'm still not going to be able to turn off 100% of these "privacy" settings. Hopefully Microsoft will get enough shit for it and eventually allow people to turn it all off. This tracking your activity started with Windows 8, Windows 7 and before there was none of this.

 

I turn off windows updater, with windows 8 /8.1.

I've been told the automatic updates, slows your pc.

 

Slow your PC down? You remind me of people who turn off things like Windows update going "ha! I don't need these Windows updates! They just screw up your computer!" and then a few months later when something isn't working right and they see a big backlog of Windows updates they are like "Wtf? Why didn't these updates install?!? Stupid Microsoft!"

Leave Windows updates on... for your own good.

 

I did not relate someone telling me that windows update slows down your pc, to me keeping windows updates off.

So, I beg to differ.

I update when I believe it to be necessary, I simply don't want it to update automatically when ever it wishes to, and the constant laptop update/restarts every other day, I prefer to do it when I want too.

Update Tuesday is when the majority are released, so I doubt being forced to restart once a month (maybe with the additional security update) is really going to kill you.

 

Just discovered that Windows 10 also blocks uTorrent from installing. All of my WAT?

 

Didn't do that for me.

No one should be shocked to discover that windows isn't a secure operating system with privacy as a priority.

 

Welp, piracy is wrong anyway (not that you'd care, right?)

I doubt it's blocking utorrent, maybe it's just marked it as a suspicious file.

 

This is why I am not upgrading and hoping that I can play all the games I care about on Linux in the future.

 

I don't really care about privacy all that much on my main PC as I havn't to hide on it.
I'm loving Windows 10 as a whole so far, and wouldn't downgrade just because of M$'s info gathering techniques...

As for the uTorrent issue, I didn't have that and I've already used it a couple times so it's all working for me, bud.

Until they decide to stop letting you do that, yes for the registry. The hosts file just blocks known ad hosts so you don't get ads but they still will be collecting your data and likely handing it over to the government without any warrant.

 

I'm not surprised on the surveillance whether for government profiles, building of ad data, or for building a more "personalized experience." It is well known Windows isn't a secure operating system and while it's possible collection may of increased in scale, this isn't a new thing.

The collection bothers me, but outside of disabling features there's nothing I can really do and honestly, I doubt disabling features does all that much. If the collection bothered me enough, I would use linux, but I like the convenience of Mac and Windows (I'm also putting Windows 10 on my Macbook).

Pretty much, don't do anything on a Windows OS that you wouldn't be comfortable with Microsoft (and whoever they give the info to, *cough government and other companies) having. Now, I'm not really talking about your porn habits; but if you're trying to do anything along the lines of DNM (or anything of that nature),I would avoid Windows, download Tails on a USB, and use that to do other activities. Even if you're running a VPN and going through the likes of Tor, Windows isn't a secure OS.

I do not think any of this snooping really matters to your average person. As dumb as the "I don't have anything to hide" argument is (your privacy should be respected), there is a point. Average people do not care if their privacy is infringed upon.

 

This exactly, if I had taken more time to write a more in-depth response it would have sounded very similar to this.

That's why I'm using windows 10, its a convenience thing. I hate the security and privacy issues that come with windows, I'd love it if my operating system wasn't compromising my data. And if there was a alternative OS that I found suitable to handle everything I'm doing now without a huge hassle I'd switch in a heartbeat. I hope they do get out competed in the future by a superior service.

And that's a good point. You can still use widows for most things, and modify your behavior a bit when you're doing something sensitive. Using tails OS, or VPN's, or end to end encryption, etc. I wish it wasn't necessary, but for me switching to something like a linux based OS isn't worth it just because of the incompatibility issues. Although for a large majority of people, it'd work out absolutely fine. If you're just web browsing, watching videos, and using office type applications linux would be infinitely better for a lot of reasons.

Can't imagine 8.1 is any better. I'd just upgrade and toggle off what you can.
