Is my isp allowed to do this?

I have exede which has a 10gb data limit p month. So I went over it and now youtube, steam, and twitch are all blocked. I can load sythe, reddit, etc fine but those won't load at all. I am in the united states btw.

So can I do something about this?

UPDATE: They also block runescape lmfao! Can't even download the new update.

Other than switch providers or upgrade your plan there is nothing you can do about it.

Its probably buried in their agreement you or your family signed.

Well, you went over the limit. Most of the time they won't do anything and will just charge you extra. Others will stop you going over the limit altogether by cutting stuff off 100%.

Websites like YouTube and so on stream a lot of data down the line, so I guess they've done you a favour by cutting you off from that.

Is there no way to get uncapped Internet? They are a normal thing in the UK, couldn't imagine going capped over here.

I'm not familiar with what kind of plans US telecom companies offer, but this sounds like a cell phone thing. Are you hotspotting or tethering? Regardless, I suppose it works the same way.

You likely have unlimited bandwidth but with a soft cap. That means that after you reach the cap they reduce your speed and limit high bandwidth sites like the ones you've mentioned. All you can do is get a better plan or provider, something without a soft cap or with a much more generous soft cap.

It's satellite internet. They do a soft cap but this is first time I haven't been able to access youtube, steam, or twitch after going over data limit. Sadly they are the best provider in my area so I'm stuck with them unless I want dial up lol.

Then the only option would be to upgrade your plan, sadly :(

Yeah I went through that when we were switching Net, and I used my phone's mobile hotspot, regularly went over every month and was cut off from youtube/twitch. -- Rather that then them asking me to pay more.

Ofc it's their data that they're giving away/selling it, so if you've gone over, they will cut you off some services.

Just sit it out, and try not to use it all in one day!
Either that or buy a better upgrade, :)

I know people who have bought one of those grandfathered verizon unlimited data plans and then just used it as a hotspot forever. You might consider this as an alternative.

Are you sure they're the best provider? If you're eligible for dial-up, you're also eligible for DSL internet which offers you a better infrastructure than what you're getting. Not only that, but typically if DSL is available in your area then so is cable, which opens even more doors for you. I'd do some research if I were you. If you'd like some help shoot me a PM.

I used to work for Bell here in Canada and someone came in with a phone that had unlimited data on it and had no idea what that meant. You could literally take that sim card and put it into one of the portable wifi units and have unlimited internet anywhere in the country for a stupidly low price (they were paying something fucking insane like $30/mo). I was tempted to buy the plan from the guy and do an illegal info transfer :p

ISPs are scammers man. They do whatever they want and there's not much you can do because many of them have a monopoly.

My internet was ridic slow and I called them and they said that it's probably a router issue with the router THEY sold me. Then they said to come and fix it they'd have to charge $80.

It's similar to phone companies. Straight Talk said I had UNLIMITED everything. Then the fine print LIMITS everything. They got sued hard so all good, but that's just the price of business.

Maybe you should read the small print on what you sign?

Or companies should pick one claim and support it. I didn't sign anything either. It's prepaid. They say two conflicting things how is a consumer supposed to know which to believe? That's why they got sued and had to stop saying unlimited if they weren't going to give unlimited.

That's the first time I have seen something like that. If you over the limit with all the ISP's in my area they will just charge you insane amounts per GB/MB you go over.

The Short answer is NO. They can not stop you from using online services no matter what. ISP can not cap your usage, only the high speed data.
They lost a civil law suit on this few years back over this same thing.

    Same thing with cell providers.
You can do a bit of search on it and then call them and aruge this and most likely they will correct their mistake right away.
Now, With that said, you went over your 10mb high speed usage. So im pretty sure your internet will be super slow, and worthless.

i suggest if possible you get with someone who has unlimited internet.
