Regarding the right to vanish

It is not uncommon for users who are leaving Sythe.org for good to request that all their posts be deleted, or that all instances of posts containing information such as old email addresses which they no longer want associated with Sythe.org be edited or hidden.

Sythe.org's policy is that all such requests are to be denied, no negotiation possible. This policy has been known to the staff for a long time, but now I am making the public aware as well: You do not have the right to vanish from Sythe.org. You are free to delete or edit as many of your own posts as you like, but the staff at Sythe.org are not under any obligation whatsoever to help you with posts that you no longer have access to edit for any reason; in fact, they are not permitted to.

Never understood why this wasn't public, thanks. Don't put things on the internet if they're supposed to be private.

 

Not to mention you can't vanish off of Google's cache...

I was planning on making a thread on this eventually as I'm pretty sure we've all posted stuff when we were younger that we wouldn't post now.

I'll post something in feedback eventually, I understand the whole "we don't have to do anything for you" but not every user is a scammer, some may just genuinely want embarassing or silly content they posted taken down.

Can't recall any by name off of the top of my head but it happens very often, I would estimate at least a few times a month.

Once trusted users have proven otherwise in the past. This won't change.

 

I wasn't necessarily on about the market, I was more on about personal information (your name for example, personal support issues you've posted about in the past that you would no longer like to be made public).

A clause where personal information is taken down (provided the staff agree with it) would be nice. And if you are a banned user, you get 0 rights to anything being taken down.

Still, it would be nice if you could "state your case" on getting something removed from the site. The staff can still say no, just at least you have the opportunity to state why you feel it should be taken down (similar to how you should explain why you think you should receive a pardon).

This is a good policy for scammers and those trying to cover things up about themselves. But for genuine requests from users who have never been in trouble with scamming or the market and so on, there should be certain exceptions made.

I think this is a bad policy. Preserving evidence doesn't always come above all else. It should be a case by case thing.

There are plenty of valid reasons someone would request a piece of content to be removed. And plenty of reasons why you might not be able to access the site.

I've been banned for being added to a skype group. What if that stuck and years later my personal information was attached to false scam reports? You can try and explain away my example, but I can think of hundreds more.

it's dealt with on a case-by-case basis. i can't recall more than... 1 case where someone was legitimately upset with the outcome once we explained this system to them. it's not a major issue, nor are dozens of people being denied removals they want every month.

mb, i meant that requests for removal of information in general are dealt with individually. i.e., requesting that something be removed from sythe won't always get denied because not all things fall under the right to vanish

 

If there is a case by case procedure where you can state your case, should this be stated somewhere?

 

We haven't been telling the staff to handle these requests on a case-by-case basis... our policy is strictly deny.

 

One of my friends had a pardon where he posted his real name in full on it, coming up any time someone does a search for it. I would assume that this rule means that it is not possible for him to have it removed?
