The Official Name Change Poll

Please vote on whether or not you believe users should be allowed to REQUEST a name change on sythe. This is a simple yes/no poll, and should this suggestion be implemented, specific details like "Which users will be allowed to change their name" or "How many name changes will be permitted per user" will be decided by staff. You are welcome to comment saying your reasoning behind your vote in this thread as well.

To reiterate, any name change request would still have to go through staff approval. Voting yes in this poll does not mean you want people to change their name willy-nilly, it just means you want people to be able to REQUEST a name change

 

I'm abstaining from this poll as there are a lot of reasons for me to vote either way and would like to know exactly what I'm voting for.

 

Definitely. Voted yes. It will take a lot of tinkering and debate to get it just right no doubt however.

I have voted yes on this poll because i would like to change my name to the alias i'm known as on other forums because i sold my project firecape.net and am not affiliated with it anymore.

 

Yes, but only with the following restrictions:

Only 1 change. Ever. Yes changes in capitalization count.
We implement a field in the users profile which has the old name
We somehow implement a redirect from the users old profile url to the new
Users UT will be changed to "previously known as ****" for no less than 1 month
I also propose a list of name changes be maintained somewhere public.

 

Voting yes, I assume the staff will put in restrictions like how to often you can change your name, the requirements to change it and how a "name change history" viewable area would be implemented.

I think longer than 1 month would be better, just to play it safe. If someone wants a name change that bad, they would be happy to wait it out.

 

Voted no. I want to hear what will be done for those who started new accounts based on the assertion that account name changes will never be a thing for regular members.

 

I voted yes. I don't see any reason why not as long as their are a few much needed requirements for name changes such as:

• 1 name change per person ever
• Previously known as in user title for 1 month +
• Field in user profile to show old username forever if you change your username
• Only able to change your username if you are Sythe verified and 2FA so your name isn't changed when you are hacked, and this avoids everyone changing their name.

EDIT: My main account TeamJatt was reg'd 2007. I had forgot about it when I made this account. Am wondering on peoples' opinions on a name swap type of thing where this one would become TeamJatt and the other becomes Aesiir. Probably not, because then people would assume an old account was bought but what's your guys' opinions on this?

There is no reason for this. It will only cause extra confusion to an already confusing website.

If you want a different name, its simple, create a new account.

 

Agreed, this is going to be a huge shit show if it passes and it's pretty frivolous.

Do you really want half of the active user base changing their names? Because that's what will likely happen with this update.

 

Yes because starting over with brand new post count, vouches, join date, etc, is something people really want to do and is VERY simple. Yeah.... No. However, doing a name change would be simple as long as proper requirements were put on it and it would not be confusing at all.

 

I would say there's an insanely small number of active users that will actually be considered to allow to name their change. Like, I don't expect to be able to change my name and I'm sure there would at least be a cap of how many can change or something. But this poll, I believe, is to vote on whether or not it should be seriously discussed, which I think it should be. Whether it passes or not does not directly affect me since I don't do trades any more anyways.

 

Just to reiterate, no name change would be automatic. The poll is just to permit people to REQUEST name changes. Staff would reserve final judgment in deciding whether a name change request would be approved
