Debate: Is Runescape a waste of time?

Now that summer is coming up I am sure that a lot of people are planning to grind non-stop their skills to 99. Some people play +16 hours a day. This got me thinking if all of it was really worth it. Why get 99 strength on Runescape when you can get 99 Strength in real life?

Summer is supposed to be a season in which you workout, travel, or be social, however there are people that literally spend their whole summer vacation logging into Runescape everyday.

I am starting to see this as a waste of time. A Jagex mod can literally change all your stats to level 99 if they wanted in less than 5 seconds,its just a matter of changing pixels. Yet people spend endless months grinding them out. Your account can be banned at anytime or Runescape can simply close and all your hard work would be lost forever and you would have nothing to show for it. Who knows for how many years Runescape is going to be available?

What are your thoughts on this, people from Sythe?

Good post. IMO it's just like watching a movie, it's entertaining, and why go out and kick a ball etc if you are happier playing a game? If you literally have nothing you have to do and playing makes you happy it's perfectly fine to play all day.

 

Most things are a waste of time overall if you look at it that way. Lets say you start working out (IRL), then something in your life happens and you quit the training (or you're simply bored of it). You'll now lose your work in terms of muscles in barely no time - and all effort was for nothing.. I think the same thing applies in RuneScape. You train, and when you quit some people might see it as a wasted time, some might not. When someone is out there playing a game, somebody else is working for another goal, even if that goal isn't on a computer screen. In the end it all comes down to - doing what you are enjoying -, and you can obviously still have a social life while playing RuneScape, you don't need to be isolated 16 hours a day. Some people prefer hanging out less while playing more + skyping/maybe going to LAN parties etc. No limits there, really.

Nothing enjoyable is really a waste of time tbh...

I, myself, prefer to play maybe 1 hour a day during summer.

 

If someone enjoys it, then no it is not a waste of time. The answer will be different for everyone, its subjective

 

In the end, nothing really matters, some people may see playing runescape as a waste of time while others may really enjoy it. It's all a matter of perspective, I personally don't enjoy the outside world, and I enjoy the online world.

 

I think that every thing you enjoy in life, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody else , is well spent time which definitely isn't wasted time.

 

I enjoy playing as much as the next guy, but I'm just noticing that all the time and effort I put into playing RS. Could be used to work towards something more rewarding.

I don't think the game or anything I enjoy is a waste of time, because I enjoy doing those things or playing this game.

 

myself personally find that playing runescape entertains me and gives me something to do other than gambling in real life.

 

I feel like it's a waste of time and I hate playing so much but I live in the middle of nowhere so there is nothing else to do. I've been up for 11 hours and 8 of those were on runescape.

 

I spent the last year or so questing other peoples accounts and I'm still stuck in parent's basement. It kills me inside to think of how much better my love could have been. I turn my PC off and suddenly I have no purpose in life. Nobody on sythe tries to help either they just say it's your fault and you're weak minded. Jagex is no better then the cigarette companies in my eyes

 

If you have fun playing runescape, play runescape. It's not a waste if you enjoy doing it, why compare other peoples interests to your own in terms of what is a waste and what is not.

 

Not if you're enjoying it. If you're playing because you have nothing else 2 do then it's probably a waste of time

 

At the end of the day if you are doing something that you enjoy that it is not a waste of time.

 

It's worth it if you sell your gold / accounts or do services for others.

 

Every game is a waste of time. You just need to take the perspective that you're spending your free time how you want by doing what makes you happy and then it's no longer time wasted.

The way I see it is its a cheap way to pass the time and keeps you out of trouble. I could go out and blow $100 at a bar (which on occasion is fine) or I can stay home and enjoy saving some money. It's the same thing for any video game for that matter. What I like about rs is that you actually have something to show for your time that you put into it and you could sell your account if you get bored with it for a decent profit. Just my 2cents.

If you get to sell all your stuff for $$$ when you quit its not that big of a time waste, but then again you could probably earn 20x as much with doing a part time job at a restaurant, etc
