What's the point with double majors? Is it really needed nowadays?

Currently studying nautical science. Hopefully I will be working on ships as a navigator once I'm finished in two years.

I'm studying medicine in Mexico, here you don't have to make an undergrad. Here you go in directly after High School but once you finish you get the license on medicine but you can't really do much with it, jobs are limited and wages are horseshit unless you go private (where you can't charge that much because you are just a general doctor) , however once you finish you can take an exam similar to USMLE where about 26k+ doctors take the test for around 7k residency spots, there is where all the money, science and good things are. I plan on taking the test and hopefully get to Internal Medicine (That along with Surgery are the most difficult to get in) and then doing a subspecialty on endocrinology.

Basically that means you're my twin, minus the metallurgy

There's a lot of point in double majors, or even double degrees; it allows you to specialise in more than one thing, which can in many cases make you more employable. Case in point: with my double in Chemical and Materials Engineering, I'm focusing a lot more on material science and a lot less on pure chemical and process engineering. This will better qualify me for a job in, for example, the plastics industry. It also teaches me a fair bit of mechanical engineering which is incredibly useful for materials selection in Design Engineering (e.g. perhaps I want to design an oil refinery section). Similarly, perhaps one might want to do biomedical science focusing on the technology side (e.g. MRI machines). Some universities offer a dual major in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering for exactly that purpose.

Essentially it sacrifices depth in one major for breadth of knowledge over more than one field. If you know what you want to do, I actually think it's more useful.

What are you studying in college?

Exactly. Also metallurgy is simply because up in the Canadian north where I live mining is a large portion of our revenue so unless I want to go live in the alberta oil sands having a metallurgy minor will go a long way to making me stand out above a standard chemical engineer.

What are you studying in college?

I'm interested in the answer to this question, as well. I was incredibly close to majoring Philosophy because it's easily the most interesting field of study to me, but seriously you can't be planning on making much money or getting a career with that major unless you're maybe going for a Psych doctorate or something. My advice would be to switch it out to your minor if you still can.

i'm friends with a guy who's been applying to internships at think tanks with his philosophy major. apparently there is some demand for them in those sorts of firms; i've heard of financial places hiring them as well albeit more rarely

No offense, but that is so wrong. To think that a kid fresh out of high school can go and start med school, then work in 4 years? Hell no. I assume that if you get certified in Mexico, that doesn't mean you can practice in the states?

In all of Europe you start in medical school right after high school however it takes 6 years to complete plus a year & half as a medical intern.
