Nice to see young men fully engaged in conservative movement, protecting the 2nd amendment as an American. Sad to see such a young positive soul die.

I don't really think we should start prioritising people on an organ list based on what they've done in their life, while I do agree that this is a silly situation where nothing was learned.

Deny patients a second chance at life because of past incidents? I'm sorry, but that's outright crazy. Who determines whether someone should live or die? If I'm not mistaken, a doctor should not refuse to help patients no matter who they are, and what they've done. If this was the case, criminals would not be treated for. While I do agree that this guy chose the wrong path after being given a second opportunity at life, this should not be used as a representation for disdainful behavior when considering who should live, and you shouldn't. At that point you would be playing the role of a God, and that is just blasphemous.

Yeah, because someone should be allowed to choose based on their own morals. Take medic soldiers for example. They treat enemies all the time, to keep them alive. It isn't an individual's right to decide. That's bs.

Idk man. So because he got a transplant, he should've been a good guy? The doctors can't deny life to someone based on their actions. Was he in jail/prison for anything? No. Even if he was, should he have been denied the right to life then? No. He should've been rejected on the transplant list for not taking medicine? That's as stupid as hell.

Sure, he committed a crime, but why should being given a transplant have turned him into some good-doing guy? A "second chance" doesn't permit anything. It shouldn't be seen that way. People are gonna do what they do regardless, so I don't even see how his transplant is relevant (or brought up, for that matter).

The Twitter response was pretty absurd. Yeah, he had a gun in a picture. Must be a thug. No, he owns a gun, it isn't a crime the last time I checked. But people are going to perceive it as thug material because he committed a crime. Yeah, it's said that he used a gun in the crime he died while doing, but really? The lady used the picture to depict black people (in general) as thugs. It was like, sass. As if she were saying, "I used that shirtless picture because people would've been mad if I used the picture with a gun." No. I'm sure he had more than just those two pictures. Nothing is even wrong with having a gun in your profile picture. But, again, he's black, and committed a crime (with probably that same gun), so let's just write it off as: he's a bad guy.

I'm unsure as to, did he commit crimes prior to his transplant? It looks as if his "bad behavior" was not taking his medicine. And then after the transplant, engaged in criminal activity. And it looks like they're only talking about the robbery/police chase. So... the one crime (plus the one from the mugshot from January -- but they didn't specify)? Not sure if that's right or not. Even so, it's still irrelevant to if he should've received the new heart.

People don't take their required medicine all the time. BUT WAIT. He's black and a criminal, so let's also make that relevant. The doctors decided he'd be compliant in the end, anyway, so.

Crime = life not worth saving?

When will the race issue go away? "But it's not about him being black." Yes, it is, lmao.

[waits to be called ignorant and stupid]

    @ Ghast/Yankiee

Your arguments ignore that organs for transplant are a finite resource. Someone else will not receive a heart and die because this person did receive a heart. This is why quality of life has to be taken into consideration. You act as if doctors play a game where they decide whether or not someone should live or die, however, it is actually a decision on who does live and who does die - there will be someone who dies no matter what. In this case, the reason for him not being put on the transplant list was noncompliance. Because the hospital was threatened with being called racist, he was put on the transplant list and got his operation a week later.

The victims in this case were not just, the man he stole the car from, not just the elderly woman he shot at, not just the woman he hit with the stolen car, but the child that didn't receive their heart transplant and died because they weren't fortunate enough to be a black criminal, which is apparently a more important factor than the educated decisions of medical professionals.

Exactly - it's a supply and demand issue, and it appears as if the hospital caved to public pressure.

I'm honestly surprised there isn't some law against non compliant felons receiving transplants. We don't allow them to have a voice in our politics through voting, what some would consider a fundamental right, so I'm surprised there isn't more red tape with them getting a transplant. I'm not suggesting banning them, but some level of consideration especially in the case of non compliance.

Your justifications are egregious. The constitution states that all individuals have the right to health, "the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health". They label it as a fundamental, inalienable human right. By denying that person subsequent health for past incidents, you're rejecting that person immediate health care, in turn alienating them. What happens if a person with an unblemished criminal record commits a crime after receiving the transplant? Are you going to say they made the wrong choice? You're saying those who regret committing offences against their respective state that would brandish them as criminals are not allowed to be looked at as equals in regard to life quality, even though they paid the consequences following that crime. You're stereotyping all criminals based on how many incidents? One? Let's also not blame systematics, because the poor are not expected to commit crimes to meet adequate lifestyles.

Well at least when we're 3D printing new hearts they won't be in short supply.

/offtopic, but it's quite possible this will change. The legality of disenfranchisement laws are based on section 2 of the 14th amendment and while it held up in the supreme court in 1974 (it shouldn't have), it likely wont if a case goes to the Supreme Court again (at least IMO.)

Read what I said again. It's not as if doctors are euthanizing criminals and stripping them of their right to health. Transplant organs are a finite resource. Someone will receive a heart, and because of that, someone else will not, and that person will die. It is the job of the medical professionals to make the decision of which patient will receive the heart.

Can't say I'm surprised, some criminals once they do something stupid once and go to jail for it, they come out and decide they want more. The only end for people like these is either in jail, or an early grave, he ended up with the latter.
