Why isnt anyone selling keys anymore?

I was just curious to know why people stopped selling keys, or the main seller's inventory was empty lately.

Recently 2-3 huge key sellers got trade banned for no reason. They aren't from Sythe. I know 1 got unbanned, I haven't checked up on the others. Now these were the most popular traders. I guess it caused panic. The one that got unbanned cashed out and stopped. The reason they got banned, no one knows for sure. Something like this has happened before to 1 user, but it hit 2-3 users at the same time.

Now with the current market restriction, less keys are in circulation as well. In the past people could just buy keys with steam wallet, now it puts a lot off people off from doing so unless they would like to open a case.

Coincidentally a similar question was brought up. Items are trying to be traded for cheap, at one point those would sell fast, these days even at quicksell price, it's harder to get rid of their knives.

I'd just like to add that a lot of people envied these sellers so it was normal for people to report them for no reason, others mass reporting and such. The 2 traders I know that got banned, were unbanned shortly after. These were basically users that have dozens of comments on their profile daily asking if they can buy/sell/MM.

 

I have also heard Steam is trying to make the keys stop because they loose money on it (So people will use the Steam Market more).
But I have no idea if that is true or not. Just felt like to throw it out there.

 

I'm assuming there's no ways to get keys other then the marketplace from steam



Why are they priced so low if thats the case

 

People use keys to trade for skins etc. which puts unused ones in circulation.

 

They are priced low because its an incentive for people to buy there keys in order for the seller to cash out there steam wallet.

 

I'm sure they had this in mind. But I don't see how this encourages spending more money to buy their keys. Previously every key in circulation was from them after all. A lot of traders bought keys from the client when they had extra cash from selling items. Now these traders won't buy keys unless they want their items restricted for a week. This sort of discourages selling your items on the market. It also encourages holding onto your steam wallet for good deals on the market. I'd have rather bought an asiimov WW the few times it was at $55 in the market than keys. The asiimov is also cheaper, technically 22 keys, and you wait the same time before you can trade/bet it but you can also use it.

Buying keys is almost always for cases now. They are also losing money on items sold in the market. FT asiimovs for example, before the restrictions, it was normal to see 30+ sold in an hour, 50+ in an hour on good days. Now it's more like 10 normal and 20+ on a good day. I don't know and haven't checked if other smaller items like ak redlines felt the impact.

 

Makes alot more sense. I have been trying to look for sellers for the longest time and was struggling, thanks for clearing it up guys

 

But those keys that people trade still come from Valve so someone is buying them anyway.

 

Maybe there was to much swapping? idk. someone just said it to me.

 

People use their keys form sheer boredom before the 7 day trade ban is over. So along with the people trading then using some of those keys, and the lack of keys actually make it past the 7 day ban, the amount of keys in constant circulation has fallen drastically.
