I've been thinking of getting a pair of headphones to replace my Astros A50 headset as I don't really need the mic function.

First of all though, do you think its worthwhile to get new headphones considering I already own a fairly high end headset? Its important to note that Astros A50's, from my understanding, don't work with mobile device as they're wireless and require the amp so I can't really use it outside of home.

Suggestions? My budget is around $400.

Do you use them much outside of your gaming station?

look to see where else your money could be used and determine if you really NEED new headphones.

Heard nice things about Sennheiser HDs, new AKGs, and cheaper end, the Audio Technica.

Full indepth guide on headphones rated for gaming:

    http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad...-guide-update-1-4-2015-beyerdynamic-t70-added

I personally have owned AKG K701s for years. Love them to death because of their comfort. A slight mod (removal of a dampening diaphragm) brings a more dynamic bass to these headphones. The downsides are that you really need an amp to get the most out of listening to them (whether it be the Soundblaster ZXR/Xonar cards or a dedicated amp) and that it runs on a 1/4" jack (as opposed to an 1/8" or 3.5mm). Oh and their customer service is... well let's just say the US isn't high on their "give a fuck" list.

I love them enough though that I picked up a second pair just to have around... And I can switch between the modded and unmodded versions. n4n0 has my unmodded versions at the moment, and has used them before if you want a comparison to how they are in comparison to A50s.

V-Moda Crossfade LP's are my current favorite portable headphones. Great sound (after a 40 hour burn-in) but still feels like it could use a little more to them. For a $70 set of headphones I couldn't really complain that much though. Customizable "shields", relatively comfortable (I wore them for about 4 hours today), and comes in a hardshell pouch with both a mic/remote plug-in cord and a normal headphone cord.

Prefer sennheiser, I own a pair of hd 650's and a schiit amp/dac. A little over your budget so you could go down a model or two from the 650's. But they're the most comfortable headphones ever, once they mold to you you'll forget you're wearing them. The sound is excellent, and it'll make you want to re-download your entire library in .flac audio because you can finally hear the difference clearly.

Bowers and wilkins. quite frankly, they're probably one of the top 5 best sounding headphones there is. Look at the P7's, and you'll never own another pair of headphones....the sound quality is nothing short of spectacular.... Hell, the damn things actually have regular speaker drivers in them, which blew my mind!

*I will warn you though that if any of your music is of shitty quality, these headphones will emphasize just how shitty it is.*

I'm currently using the Plantronics Rig gaming headset, allows you to change out the mic to a boom mic or the lapel hanging as part of the wire mic. also lets you plug it into another audio source such as your phone while gaming so you can hear and adjust each ones volume separately. I bought mine for $50 on sale but it usually goes for $100 retail price. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...ode=42-32502047-2&WT.mc_id=US_datafeed_Google

Another good headset would be sol republic, not specifically made for gaming but extremely comparable to beats without paying 3 times the price.

There's been a lot of great suggestions but I'm mostly looking to find a pair of headphones that I can use on the go, without an amp/dac to listen to music. I understand that it won't sound nearly as good without one but I'd like the flexibility to be able to use it without an amp and have it not sound terrible like some headphones.

IDK that much about headphones, but I believe sasrt8 is correct, for the price you are paying you want to look at the high end of the market. I am quite young (still in school, high school as americans call it) and my dad has a speaker bar or whatever from B&W, and the quality is ridiculously good, so as for quality B&W are perfect, and are in that price range for you
