creating websites

let's say I want to buy some domain names and create websites

for example, let's say I want "amazingapplepie.com" such that I can display pictures of glorious apple pies; i also want "confusedgoats.org" so I can display pictures of confused goats and write about them too. can i just use google domains or whatever and select urls, buy them, and put whatever code I want on them? or are there tools that i need to use to be able to do this. xolr mentioned something about ftp, and I'm not really sure what that is, so as an added question, how does that factor into things?

You need both a domain and hosting, preferably from the same place. The hosting will have a control panel of some kind that let's you do various things (Install some pre-loaded apps, visually view your files, etc).

FTP means file transfer protocol. You can use a client such as filezilla or winscp to connect to your site and transfer files back and forth.

 

Pretty much sums it up. I bought mine from a site who sells the domains and all packed individually so they're all relatively cheap. Think the domain is like 30 bucks with hosting. And then I think I pay 3.5$ a month for the ability to upload and manage the site from them. Package includes site emails and all that too.

Tbh it was confusing as hell at first they offered so many different things I didn't know what was what.

It confused the hell out of my so if you do use them make sure you read exactly what each service offers and does. I made the mistake of buying the domain and hosting service, sat there for 3 hours looking for the console to post my files. It was then I realized I hadn't bought that package lol.

I would be interested highly if you could prove this claim. If 67 servers "nothing" attacks a site I protect using you. You're saying you can prevent that? sent skype request

 

Mostly I just want two sites, one for my personal stuff, and one for experimental stuff... so maybe just one site lol. Not really worried about ddos right now but yeah, I'll look around and talk to farcast and DD and get back to you - thanks!

 

Shop around for the best deals on domain names and look for good bandwidth and if you're new to web hosting then a good control panel can be handy too.

I use iPage for my hosting, But don't have to deal with a lot of traffic.

Basic step process to achieve your desired result would be;

-Buy domain name with hosting or separately and transfer the domain to your host.

-Find a simple web template for free or purchase one for your desired needs. Themeforest.net is a great website for buying graphics, templates etc.

-ftp ( file transfer protocol ) basically gives you access to the files hosted by your web host. Directories will be in direct affect of your domain for example your index will be in your www folder, www folder will be the root of your domain name. Any subsequent folders/groups you have in that directory will be a directory of your domain name, example

What your trying to do can be achieved with simple html/css, but you can incorporate .php into the mix to have a databased retrieving script for your images and comments / bio to the images.

I suggest either paying someone on here to do it for you as it isn't a difficult task or learn it yourself, should only take you a few days max to achieve.
