Does using your computer/laptop without any source of light hurt your eyes?

What I mean by this is using your laptop when the room is pitch black. Does it hurt your eyes / eventually cause nearsightedness or farsightedness?

 

Not at all for me. And I do this all the time. I've no idea what effects this can have over time I'm afraid... Google?

Depends how bright your screen is and how long you stare at it for. Staring at any kind of light or screen is bad over a period of time, even a TV screen in a lit room.

 

Well if you are in a dark room and then open your laptop it will hurt your eyes but I am not talking about long term damage.

Most screens are as light as sunlight so during the day no problem. But if it gets darker it can become a problem. I need glasses/contacts to see far away. an eye specialist told my friend once it had nothing to do with your computer though.

You can always use f.lux it slowly adjust your screen brightness according to the time of the day.

 

What I was referring to was whether it would cause any permanent damage, requiring me to use glasses. I appreciate the answer none the less.

Sunlight isn't exactly light, but I get your point. Good to know your friends eye complications had nothing to do with the computer.

 

If you'd like to read more about it, you can find it here. Now I wouldn't take the risk and I'd take care of your eyes if possible. Reduce the brightness of the laptop and/or get f.lux. Either consult an expert or just play it safe.

 

Sometimes staring at the computer when playing high res games can give me a crazy sore head.

 

Anything that causes you to fixate on one region for a long time can probably cause eye strain. I definitely find that if I'm staring at a screen for 8+ hours a day, it causes me pain/headaches/probably eye damage as well.

 

As I said, it depends on longevity and glare. It could potentially depending on those.

 

hmmm I don't experience any symptoms of eyestrain at all. Weird. Maybe I'm just used to it?

 

I keep my screen brightness low af every time after a good movie i go to google, i get fked

Yeah I do this, right now infact, I just turn my screen brightness to the lowest, if I keep it up high my eye balls fry lol x[)

My eyes start to hurt instantly if there isn't another light source in the room. Idk how my brother does it but it's impossible for me.

 

I hate screens that are too bright, so I use Pangobright and Screen Filter to dim my screens when the built in brightness control isn't enough.

I do it unintentionally. I suggest using shades specifically for the computer. You'll thank yourself later on in life.

 

My eyes do get sore at night if I spend ages doing it even with f.lux, I can only imagine without. With that being said I have no issue with my eyesight. How susceptible you are to soreness etc varies a great deal from person to person.
