Windows Media Player having trouble playing some songs

Recently reformated my computer and now Windows Media Player is having issues playing some songs. These issues were not present prior to the reformat and there isn't anything wrong with the files themselves as they play fine in VLC.

I've tried a few things (can't think of them currently off the top of my head since I've just woken up) but any assistance would be appreciated.

 

Did you download the songs using Youtube-MP3? if yes then that might be the case, happened me before.

If they work in VLC, why not just run them in that?

 

VLC will play just about anything. The beauty of VLC is that it has a wide range of codecs. That's why people use VLC. WMP simply doesn't play many file types and codecs at all.

 

No, they're albums

They played in WMP prior to reformatting though, there shouldn't be an issue with it. You think a lack of codec's are the error? I'm not so sure, for example two songs I have - one plays and one does not yet they are both mp3.

 

Install all Windows updates?

 

All updates have been installed and WMP is up to date.

 

Sounds like a codec issue, especially if they play in VLC; make sure you have the right codecs installed. VLC tends to have its own codecs or whatever I think - it basically plays anything.
