Looking for Java / C++ Help for School

Hey I have always been interested in coding mainly Java, I have tried reading some of the beginners books such as java programing for dummies to get the general feel of it yet retained very little. I have yet to push myself or try very hard which will happen this year.

However starting in 3 days I will begin the second semester of college where I will be taking both a Java and C++ class to further my knowledge and hopefully begin my life in programing. Those 2 classes offered by my college however are only offered online so hands on experience is based on me and my own willingness to put forth effort which I have every intention of doing to my full extent.

What I am looking for is someone or a group of people (Think Tank if you will) that would be willing and able to help me / mentor with the beginning steps that I may have missed, questions from problems that I will run into and can't answer elsewhere, constructive criticism on ideas that may pop up, and help with assignments that would push me in the right direction if I am hopelessly lost.

Like I said I am in college so I don't have a ton of capital to work with aside from my part time job. I would be willing to pay you for your services with PayPal or if you would be interested Runescape EoC accounts.

Can't help with C++ but try reading the latest version of 'Java: How To Program'. When I was learning I found this was the most helpful textbook for me (lots of code examples, very detailed).

See if your University/College offers subscriptions to Pluralsight and/or Safari Books. These are both packed full of useful resources for programmers of all levels.

Continue reading your book and do practice coding problems. You won't retain much if you only read. There's plenty of people here ready to help you, but they can't do the work for you.

 

I am trying to do the problems given in the book. but half of them have nothing to do with the chapter I read. I have tried asking the questions I have while making the programs on Google but rarely find anything pertaining to it.

/currently trying to create a plus sign formed specifically out of asterisks. so output would be this...

Currently have the top 5 asterisks but not sure how to get the middle part and bottom of the sign without it looping from 1 * to 11 * or giving me an illegal start of expression error.

First off, you should practice proper naming; classes should be capitalized, methods lowercased (or camel I guess), etc. And for-loops should go from 0 to n, not from 1 to n+1.

Try using two for-loops within each other. See where that gets you. Maybe think about if statements as well... Some of the time you want to print out one thing and other times you want to print out another, right?

Also, to other people responding to this, don't give him an answer without him getting there on his own. That's no fun.

 

This is day 2 on the job, I am sorry if my complete lack of experience bothers you but thanks for the input I will try harder to be a pro.

 

Here is a formatting tip
Look up printf, what you do will work but it is more efficient if you start using printf

For example
System.out.printf("%4s", "*");

the first "%s" says what kind of primitive you put into it
s = string
d = int
f = float
...
the 4 between % and s is how many white spaces you put for each print
You can find all of them in javadocs

Second part "*" is what will be filled in on the first part (%s).
You can put here a String variable or a String yourself like I did with *

Thanks, still not sure exactly what to do with that because I have yet to learn those terms but I looked them up and came up with this..

int : An integer (ex, 3).
Can be a whole number between -2147483648 and 2147483647

float : A fractional (floating point) number (ex, 3.25907).
Can be a number between roughly 1.5 x 10^45 to 3.4 10^38, in floating point format.

String : A sequence of characters (ex, "Hello User 6555")
(no specified maximum length, as far as I'm aware!)

Are those the correct definitions and what they do in the program?

My problem right now is how to get the 11 asterisks to go across then continuing with the bottom part of the plus sign
